Abstract:
With this project NEC targets to increase its institutional performance and stimulate the academic environment that has enabled it to win important ERC-funded research grants. Focused on advanced research, NEC aims to provide its fellows - researchers and academics in the humanities and social sciences from Romania and abroad - with working conditions comparable to those in similar Western institutions, ensuring an institutional context that encourages inter- and trans-disciplinary debate. The programmes and activities organised by the NEC are geared towards synchronising research and academic life in Romania and the region with that of international academic circles, an important and constant concern being the intensification of contacts between the specialists hosted by the NEC and their colleagues from all over the world and the promotion of valuable scientific approaches existing locally and regionally. NEC will carry out, within the framework of the award project, research activities through the following components of its programme: awarding research fellowships, organising stable research groups, supporting the programme of lectures and visiting professors, organising workshops, seminars, conferences, the mobility programme of fellows and alumni, developing and modernising the institutional infrastructure.

Abstract:
The proposed project aims to examine the history of popular music in socialist Romania, from 1948 until 1989, focusing, in particular, on the genres of jazz, rock, and light music and on their role in performing communist and nationalist ideologies, as well as in addressing demands of cultural consumption for various audiences. The project takes an interdisciplinary approach, as it brings together instruments of analysis from cultural and social history, cultural anthropology, and musicology. The research project construes the popular music genres of jazz, rock, and light music as spaces of interaction/negotiation between audiences and musicians, musicians and cultural activists/representatives of political authority, as well as between musicians themselves, depending on their social background, musical education and influences, and administrative authority/ies. While it focuses on the Romanian national context, the project also relies on an asymmetrical historical comparison with other national case studies of popular music behind the Iron Curtain (Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union).

Abstract:
The project The Encyclopedia of Romanian Imaginaries. Historical Patrimony and Cultural-Linguistic Identities (ROMIMAG) aims to produce a knowledge base and a five-volume Encyclopaedia, providing a synoptic perspective on the cultural inheritance and spiritual identities of Romania. However, it would be impossible to tackle cultural identities without a thorough analysis of the collective imagination. Guided by the powerful and innovative concept of social and cultural imaginaries, along with other key concepts such as semantic basin, linguistic field, constellations of images, fractal identity, ROMIMAG will use multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary methodologies for analyzing the main domains of Romanian collective representations. It will feature 5 scientific work packages, covering the following fields: Romania’s Linguistic Patrimony; Literary Imaginaries; Historical Representations; Religious Imaginaries; Artistic Imaginaries and Patrimony. Within a two-year calendar, each work package will feature about 20 contributors, who will produce 20 articles presenting the main cultural basins covered by their volume, and 2 patents. This database will be published online (an interactive site, designed as an “electronic hive”) and in print (a five-volume Encyclopedia, published by Polirom, Iași). ROMIMAG targets different categories of public: educated (writers, artists, musicians, theatre and movie directors, linguists, editors, media specialists, curators), broad (pupils, students, general readership) and institutional (media studios, advertising and tourism companies, leaders and policy makers from the administration and governance levels). This panoramic image of the cultural and spiritual patrimony of Romania will offer, within the frame of European interculturalism, a better understanding of national, but also of local and group identities, which could prevent latent tensions and social violence from erupting and allow the configuration of a collaborative climate.

Abstract:
This project aims to contribute to strengthening NEC’s institutional performance and stimulating the academic environment that has allowed Romanian scholar to be granted ERC-funded research contracts. All ERC and Horizon 2020 projects hosted by NEC are coordinated by alumni who have benefited from NEC’s interdisciplinary environment and its vast network of international contacts. Thus, the project aims to fund several postdoctoral fellowships for researchers in the humanities and social sciences, to organize two research groups, to invite internationally renowned foreign specialists to give lectures and seminars at NEC, to encourage academic mobility of fellows and alumni, facilitating their participation at international scientific events, as well as to equip the institution with high-performance equipment indispensable for carrying out the research and dissemination activities described above. The activities we expect are at the same time likely to increase the international visibility of Romanian research. By maintaining and stimulating a quality academic environment, we ensure favorable conditions for the development of new competitive research projects and the preparation of teams to successfully compete in European research competitions.

Abstract:
The project proposes and interdisciplinary analytical approach of the musical output of one of the most important representatives of the Romanian musical Diaspora and a leading composer within the contemporary musical world. Costin Miereanu’s compositional output will be analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective of a three-dimensional structure: along the strictly musical elements (with aspects of style, form, notation, sound events), the approach will be extended to the semiotic interpretation and to the psychoanalytical one. Costin Miereanu’s works will thus be decrypted using the modern methods of the semiotic model proposed by Eero Tarasti and other scholars in the field. Psychoanalytic theory will provide us the instruments to explain the human experience, via the unconscious motivations of the works. Also, the analysis of Miereanu’s work will be integrated in the broader context of the contemporary musical manifestations, highlighting the unique place he occupies. Miereanu’s most important pieces will be detailed in the musicological volume, by analyzing their particularities, the importance within the composer’s output, compositional techniques, musical expression, difficulties for the performers, etc. Thus, we propose an approach yet not encountered in Romanian musicology. Also, as far as the international context is concerned, the correlation between the three fields, music, semiotics and psychoanalysis has not been applied to Costin Miereanu’s compositions.
