Abstract:
Monumental or ‘excessive’ graves built in the vicinity of Greek colonies, on the western and northern shores of the Black Sea, have represented a constant subject of archaeological interest. Even if there is no clear and unique ‘Greek way’ of burial in the Black Sea colonies, the traditional scientific approach has tended to assign funerary excess, including monumentality, in graves found in the Greek cities’ cemeteries during the Archaic, Classic and Early Hellenistic periods, to non-Greek people – the ‘natives’, either Scythians or Thracians. During the last decade several studies have placed more focus on the social strategies embedded in the funerary discourse of ancient people, including Greeks, than in the relevancy for ethnic identification, especially in complex cultural milieus.
The current project is bringing into attention a group of late 4th c. BC chamber tombs in tumuli built around the Greek city of Kallatis (Mangalia, Romania), traditionally interpreted as commissioned by Thracians or Scythian chieftains engaged in close relations with the ancient city. The team attempts to unravel this complicated puzzle of claimed ancient identities by conducting a multi-scaled interdisciplinary exploration, evolving from detailed analysis of two particular such monumental funerary ensembles, to the study of the much neglected and almost destroyed tumuli necropolis of Kallatis. The project has a three level design of its objectives:
Objective 1. The complex study and documentation of two large tumuli covering early-Hellenistic underground-chamber tombs (Movila Documaci and Neptum Mound).
Objective 2. To correlate the two studied monuments with the wider tumuli landscape of the Kallatis cemetery.
Objective 3. On a larger perspective the project was designed to advance the general archaeological exploration of great tumuli.
Methods: Remote sensing (airborne and UAV), geophysics, excavation, architectural studies, physical and chemical analysis of pigments.

Abstract:
The project aims at the advancement and integration of technologies, acquisition and data processing, subordinate of a multitude of geological-geophysical techniques for setting land physical properties and assessment of land degradation status in areas with potential for natural hazard and/or induced by industrial activities. Items like the dynamics of surface formations are covered in order to resolve the problem of instability of the land.
Because the evaluation, monitoring and mitigation of land degradation process due to landslides require information on the physical characteristics of the lithological and geological complexes involved, the project aims to increase the possibilities of the main geophysical methods (seismometry, geoelectrical, remote sensing) to investigate section of little depth(shallow landslide), developing a methodology tested in critical /hot points in the areas chosen for study, in order to improve the degree of knowledge, the calibration methods and integration strategy for the hazards management.
Knowing this, is highlighted as an important feature of methodological developments, an aggregate of non- invasive seismic technologies to determine, in situ, the main geoelastic parameters – Poisson-μdin coefficient, Edin longitudinal elasticity module, shear module - Gdin and compression module - Kdin. The objectives can be achieved by establishing the longitudinal and transversal wave velocities distributions in shallow section, queries of geological engineering investigation.
Our technology has a consensual approach with the current research results from abroad, performing exact procedures of valorization 2D Spectra (wave number Spectra) to calculate the transversel wave velocities and mathematical relationships, some original, other adapted to determine longitudinal wave velocities in an environment with velocity gradient. Therefore such a problem solver, cost-effective, technologically advanced "aggregate", (that doesn’t require expensive monopunctual observations through the microseismical logging invasive methodology) is created, as a result of the objectivity of "automated" data processing.
This project versatile spectrum content reveals the following significant subdomanins:
a - extended use, development, calibration and validation of acquisition technology followed by data processing of electrometry and seismometry in conjunction with engineering geology mapping leads to studies for the anthropic and/or natural hazards estimation and also the ability of mapping current effects;
b- establishing correlations between the geophysical measurements results, embodied in the main physical and mechanical properties (dynamic elasticity and deformation modules, cohesion indices, angle of internal friction) of the unstable deposits involved (shallow landslides, mining subsidence, collapse etc.);
c- economic and social impact assessment by studying the importance of land users;
d- developing a guide that includes proposals for the standardization of processes and technologies used by describing the system in terms of components: equipment used (data acquisition system), methods that harness observations (information processing, inversion procedures, laboratory tests), physical and geological results interpretation of the methodological aggregate used as well as the operational protocol applied.
e- Posting directions for guidance on selecting appropriate strategies for hazard management (proposing the possibility of models extrapolation).

Abstract:
This is an interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary project aiming at producing innovative environmental services and ecotechnologies useful for the management of socio-ecological systems contaminated as a result of mining activities. The sustainable increasing in the competitiveness of an economy supposes the preservation of an optimal level of quality and quantity of natural capital. A major unresolved problem is the quantification and management of the positive and negative environmental externalities related to industrial activities on a regular, business as usual, base. Solving this problem is a must in order to allow the integrated environmental management (i.e. correlations between the environmental management plans of multiple stakeholders) in large scale units of the natural capital like river basins. An estimated environmental services market for risk assessment and mitigation/restoration of mining areas is about 1 billion Euros for Romania, and at least one order of magnitude larger in Europe. In this context, our goal in this project is to produce innovative environmental services and ecotechnologies for the quantification and management of the environmental externalities due to a major category of contaminated areas – tailing dams. The innovative environmental services produced in the project are: S1 Cost-effective evaluation of metals’ stocks and their mineralogical forms in tailing dams, S2 Prediction of distribution of pollution hot-spots in the floodplain groundwater in contaminated river basins, S3 Prediction of the distribution of pollution hot-spots relevant for human and species health in the floodplain soil in contaminated river basins, S4 Optimization of the monitoring systems downstream mining areas, S5 Assistance for the integration of organizational environmental management plans based on negative and positive externalities between multiple stakeholders in contaminated river basins. The innovative technology is: Remediation eco-technology based on a combination of native plant species, bacterial inoculum and fungal inoculum and subsurface methods in function of geochemical, geomophological and ecological setting.
We included letters of interest in the results of the project from the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Environment, the “Romanian Waters” National Administration, the mayor of a city located in a contaminated area, two important private mining companies with large current or potential environmental responsibilities, and one large private company involved in the remediation of tailing dams. A full stakeholders analysis at Romania scale will done within the project, supporting also the marketing of TIMMAR products.
The methodology involves working on a population of four tailing dams, their downstream rivers system, and floodplains of large contaminated rivers distributed in Romania such as to cover the geochemical and mineralogical diversity of tailing dams.
The project is implemented by three partners, of which one university participating with four research centers from three different faculties, and a large company participating with three different departments. The partners have strong experience in project area validated by participation to FP7 projects, publications with large impact, and, for the economic partner, by its business dimension and list of customers. Co-financing is 17% and salaries are only 45% of the project budget.
TIMMAR project will give opportunity to the University of Bucharest to operationalize its policy about spin-offs by creating a consulting company Biogeochemistry.Ro and by making it a successful organization in strategic alliance with the major economic player SC Prospectiuni S.A. This alliance will jointly provide environmental services related to the management of contaminated socio-ecological systems, using the patents developed from the results of the project. The share of intellectual assets and potential benefits are specified as part of the proj

Abstract:
The using of ash – recovered wastes – induces decrease the demand of natural resources.
The study demonstrated that it is possible to use ashes in the mortar compositions, by replacing a part of the cement by ashes.
They also reduce the energy-intensive production of other concrete ingredients, leading to energy saving and decreasing the “greenhouse gas” emission.
Replacing one tone of cement with fly ash it would save enough electricity to power an average home for 24 days, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions equal to a two months use of an automobile.
