Abstract:
The strategic objective of the SupraChem Lab Project is to unlock and foster excellent research in PPIMC IntelCentre by setting up a strong research group in the field of hybrid materials for adaptive self-organized supramolecular structures.
It is an already stated political demand to support the public or private R&I performers in the convergence regions in exploiting their potential to fully contribute to the development of their country/region and to the overall European research effort. Romania joined this policy through the Sectorial Operational Programmes and the National Research Programmes that stipulate measures to increase the R&I capacity of the country, to stimulate the cooperation between RTD institutions and enterprises, and to increase the access of enterprises to research and innovation. However the participation of Romania in the European Research Area is still low due especial to the lack of experience in research management and marketing.
The funding, coming from the EU's research and innovation funding programme, Horizon 2020, has offered the opportunity for excellence institutions from the European converging regions to attract top academics so that they can compete with centres of excellence elsewhere in the European Research Area (ERA). The selected institutions have to award ERA Chairs to outstanding academics who have the capacity to raise standards and attract more high level staff as well as money from other sources, such as EU research funding or regional funds. The SupraChem Lab Proposal project will implement a structural change within in “Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry - IntelCentre, Iasi, Romania by setting up a competitive research group in the field of supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract:
SEETechnology is a part of South East Europe (SEE) Transnational Cooperation Programme. The project is about co-operation of SEE (South East Europe) science parks for the promotion of transnational market uptake of R&D results and technologies by SMEs. It's about creating the environment for innovative entrepreneurship.
Therefore the main objective is to improve and develop support services to innovative SMEs provided by university based SME-support centres and science parks in order to facilitate the take-up of research ideas and products through better access to knowledge, resources and markets locally and at transnational level.
The project ultimately targets innovative SMEs, which are able to embrace research products or may be the carriers of such ideas but currently face difficulties in access to management-type knowledge, facilities and support services. The project aims at the establishment of new and durable joint transnational services, tools and frameworks and will put into practice developed and improved methods and explored good practices.

Abstract:
Recently, ionic liquids (IL) are employed as substitute for traditional solvents in catalysis, synthesis and electrochemistry. But little research work or actual applications have been published until now concerning the utilization of IL as lubricants. Generally, IL show no or very low vapor pressures, satisfying viscosity-temperature behavior, no inflammability and high thermal stabilities up to 250°C. The choice of cation and anion as well as the design of side chains determine fundamental IL properties. These properties desirable for lubricants and the possibility to create tailor-made compounds give rise to the demand of in-depth investigations of IL in tribology. To our best knowledge, the project will be the first extensive and integral approach of IL towards potential future applications as lubricants for metals, ceramics and polymers as well as base for wear and friction reducing nanoparticles. The investigations will involve molecular design and synthesis of new IL as well as preparation of advanced materials containing or based on IL. Evaluation of lubricant and material performance will range from determination of physic-chemical properties including artificial aging of IL and mechanical testing (e.g. tensile and impact strength) to tribo-metrical experiments. Wear and friction properties will be completed by thorough surface characterization, in particular towards tribo-chemical reaction layers. Parameters gained from these experiments will be used for modelling of tribo-processes in nanoscale and for molecular design of new ionic lubricants. Studies on biodegradability, toxicology and economical aspects will be studied in detail, too, to verify legal requirements and opportunities for highly potential applications. The overall objective of this interdisciplinary and inter-sectorial approach is the generation of unique and comprehensive knowledge about IL on a sustainable basis for future implementations as high performance lubricants.

Abstract:
The Centre of Advanced Research in Bionanoconjugates and Biopolymers (IntelCentre - www.intelcentru.ro) is a newly build (2010) infrastructure that has been implemented by a strategic project of 5 M Euro supported by the Romanian Sectorial Operational Program for Increasing the Economic Competitively.
The IntelCentre is a truly interdisciplinary center of excellence with the main focus on the design, preparation and characterization of biologically inspired nanostructures as potential drug carriers and the interaction of such artificial structures with living systems. The priority thematic areas of IntelCentre are focused on materials, products and innovative processes and health. The Centre was finalised in 2012 and since then one of the priorities of the development strategy in PPIMC was to make this center a fully functional research department of the Institute.
IntelCentre is divided into four research groups consisting of chemists, biologists and physicists, working in 14 research laboratories fully equipped through the project with more than 100 modern equipment. With the existing interdisciplinary combination of researchers with different scientific backgrounds – chemistry and chemical engineering, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, materials science, physics, medicine and informatics – IntelCentre represents a unique opportunity to extend the recent structural advances into truly functional materials for a wide range of important applications.

Abstract:
Polysaccharides (like cellulose or starch) are by far the largest amount of all polymers produced in the world. Fully biodegradable, they are made by Nature. They are the sustainable polymeric materials of tomorrow, when synthetic polymers coming from oil will become expensive and rare. To organize now the EU scientific community around a network in order to promote the use of these renewable raw materials as industry feedstock for the manufacturing of advanced, multifunctional materials is the purpose of this proposal. Its fits the Knowledge-Based Multifunctional Materials part, with a clear center of gravity on the 3.4.2.3 sub-topic, addressing several objectives of Priority 3 and of Priority 6. Fighting a highly fragmented area, its objectives are of long term importance, its partnership is of proved excellence, and its research plans are very ambitious.
An already established extensive connection with the industrial community ensure a lasting character. The European Polysaccharide Network is composed of 16 large and small world-class research groups from 9 countries, covering all needed expertise (polysaccharide types and scientific disciplines). To allow a full integration and give the sense of a real "super-laboratory", an independent, non-profit, private, single administrative and legal entity will run all the activities developed in common and interact directly inside the partner's organization. This structure has the very clear advantages of bringing a real collective and efficient management of activities and of allowing research groups to join or leave without administrative complexities. The ambition and objectives of the European Polysaccharide Network are also to train scientists in academia and industry, to spread knowledge, results and excellence and to attract the interest of citizens for science. All this will be organized through 29 Integrating Activities by 8 Work Packages. The Consortium Agreement has been prepared and signed by all partners.
