Abstract:
Carbon nanodots (or Carbon quantum dots, CQDs) represent a newly discovered class of nanocarbon materials, inspiring the gradually expansion of research efforts due to the increasing number of identified favorable properties. In fact, in less than a decade (2004) since their first accidental identification in carbonaceous soot, surface-passivated CQDs are already rivaling the position of traditional semiconductor-based quantum dots as top-performance photoluminescent materials, while offering at the same time radical advantages in usability and production costs. Their immediate application in bioimaging is already ascertained, however scarce studies are employing these materials in non-biological fields, even though reports demonstrating the capacity for photo-induced electron-transfer behavior in CQD leads us to the conclusion that they may additionally hold compelling potential in photovoltaics and CQD-LEDs.
It is the goal of this project to demonstrate for the first time the functionality of optoelectronic devices – LEDs and PVs – based on CQDs by thoroughly understanding from experimental and theoretical point of views the electronic, optical and transport properties of the appropriately passivated CQDs.

Abstract:
The Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques have greatly evolved since their beginings. Their use in the field of micro / nanosystems remains elusive. Novel approaches are needed for overcoming the existing limitations. The objectives of the project are: a) prospecting for rapid prototyping (RP) techniques for making structures and devices at the micro / nanoscale; b) prospecting for RP techniques that lead to the creation of fully 3D nanostructures, especially at the sub-100 nm domain. The objectives will be addressed in two ways: 1) studying the way in which present RP techniques can be used / adapted to achieve the goals; 2) conceiving and developing novel solutions for RP techniques mainly for 3D nanoscale fabrication. For that purpose, the project will address Dip Pen Nanolithography, 3D Selective Laser Sintering, 3D single photon Photopolymerization. Novelty results from: a) these techniques will be used in novel ways; b) these techniques will be used for making new structures, applicable to micro / nanodevices, that were not made up to now and that use the specific features and benefits of these techniques; c) novel techniques will be developed. At the end of the project the team will have a better overview of the applicability of these RP techniques at the micro / nanoscale and will bring new concepts for 3D RP for nanofabrication. Some of the developed ideas will be directly applicable into practice, some will be developed here and put into to practice in other projects.

Abstract:
This project proposes the development of a complete, integrated system for neural recording, with direct applicability in fundamental and applied neuroresearch. The key target elements of the proposed research are: • the development of a recording microelectrode (Fig. 2) with multiple recording sites, fabricated in silicon based MEMS technology, for combined extracellular electrical recording (action potentials) and electrochemical sensing (pH and dopamine level in the extracellular environment) • development of an adequate coating solution for ensuring a performant mechanical resistance even for longer electrode shanks • improvement of the S/N ratio performance supported by the electrode, by devising a micro/nanostructuring technology on the surface of the recording sites • development of an efficient and optimal fabrication process, with special emphasis on reproducibility, quality, cost • development of the associated electronic circuitry for signal processing, digitization and computer transfer, display and acquisition, such that a ready-to-be-used experimental chain to be realized.
