Abstract:
Is know that plastic pollution is the main pollution problem from our century being a worldwide concern. The waters systems are the most affected. Once entered in the aquatic environment, microplastics impact living organisms, posing hazards also on human health. Many studies reported macro / microplastics pollution in rivers but the extent of these products toxicity impact and mechanisms of action on the aquatic biota including fish are yet unclear or unknown. The proposed research project will be of significant importance in the development of knowledge in the field of environment and human health protection.
The project proposes a complex study on the microplastics toxicity using as target organisms the fish Cyprinus carpio, the most common fish from Romanian freshwater with important ecological and economic implications. The project intends to contribute to the knowledge’s development concerning microplastics ecotoxicology and to the understanding of their mechanisms of action in order to highlight their risk on aquatic life and also on human health taking into consideration that the carp is a considerable source of food for humans. The impact of microplastics on fish will be assessed based on ecotoxicological evaluation, investigation of antioxidant system changes, histopathological alterations as well as changes at molecular level. The toxic effects will be analyzed for their specificity in order to be considered biomarkers for microplastics pollution.

Abstract:
Antidiabetic drugs are among the most prescribed and consumed pharmaceuticals worldwide. Their occurrence in environment was little investigated due of lack of analytical methods for their detection in waters. In this work has been developed a selective SPE-UHPLC/MS/MS method for isolation, identification and quantification of some antidiabetic compounds. The 3 selected analytes (glyburide, glimepiride and repaglinide) were separated on Eclipse C18 LC column at 30°C using isocrat elution with mobile phase of acetonitrile: 0.04% acetic acid (60/40, v/v %). The optimal flow rate was 0.2 mL/min and the injected volume was 10 µL. The contaminants were detected in negative electrospray ionization mode (ESI-) by Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM). Collision energy, fragmentor voltages were optimized to obtain high sensitivity. Optimization of SPE-LC-MS/MS parameters gave low quantification limit values between 0.27 and 11.1 ng/L. The organic pollutants were isolated from waste water samples on Strata C18 cartridges. The linear regressions were drawn in the interval of 1-100n g/L with good determination coefficients. Spike recovery rates were between 74.5 and 88.2% for waste water, with satisfactory precisions (RSD

Abstract:
The RADAR project aims to assess the prevalence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance (AR) from urban, clinical and industrial wastewater into the aquatic environment via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Moreover, RADAR will give information on the environmental and clinical resistome, identifying the possible mechanisms of AR emergence and spread.
Scientific objectives: i) investigation of WTTPs resistome to establish the prevalence of AR bacteria (ARB)/genes (ARGs) in the environmental samples from upstream-WWTP-downstream transects; ii) evaluation of selected antibiotics (beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones and macrolides) occurrence in both WWTP’ influent and effluent; iii) comparative analysis of geographically and time related ARB/ARGs from wastewaters and clinical sources; iv) assessing and prediction how the presence/absence of ARGs and their relative abundance depending on a class of geographical, hydrological, physico-chemical and microbiological factors.
Methodology: The urban, clinical, farming and industrial wastewater will be monitored by physico-chemical, microbiological methods and metagenomics throughout various steps, i.e.: 1000 m upstream river, influent, different treatment steps inside WWTP, effluent and 200 m downstream river. Wild fish from the receiving river after discharge of WWTP effluent will be also analyzed. The following analyses will be performed: i) LC/MS and HPLC techniques to monitor the levels of selected antibiotics; ii) isolation and identification of ARB belonging to ESKAPE species; iii) evaluation of metagenomic resistome by bioinformatic data processing; iv) environmental and clinical ARGs and plasmids sequencing; v) analyzing the potential of ARGs for transferability and environmental/clinical risk by mapping the insertion loci of transposable elements and the ARGs potential to mobilize the resistance genes in a bioreactor model; vi) elaboration of a prediction model for the occurrence of ARB/ARGs

Abstract:
The project aims to obtain an computerized technology, applicable nationwide, for multi-criteria characterization of the microbiological drinking water samples in order to monitor its quality in real-time, and hardware and software modules, for real-time acquisition, measurement, storage, secured transmission and viewing of digital data for microbiological parameters of drinking water and more. They will allow stakeholders to implement this technology with minimal cost and without changing their technical infrastructure.
Development of an information technology meet the needs of improving water quality assessment methods. Lately, European organizations involved in updating regulations concerning water management (WHO, OECD) insisted on the need to improve evaluation methods and management of microbiological safety of drinking water. They suggest switching from using monitoring as a tool for checking the finished product towards the concept of using monitoring results as a starting point for risk management actions.
The proposed information technology envisages two directions of project's development:
1. Starting from existing control procedures of microbiological parameters, imposed by Law. 458/2002, a nationwide computer network will be created, accessible through the Internet, having as nodes the operators of drinking water and a national coordinating center.
2.The technology will implement a new concept useful in treating microbiological accidental contamination which is the possibility to perform measurements of microbiological and physics - chemical parameters, using a portable electronic module, energy autonomous, placed "into contaminated area", which can wirelessly transmits data to the drinking water distribution operators' servers, and from here towards the authority’s server, where it can be displayed, in real time, in a dual graphic-text form, allowing viewing the time evolution of contamination removal.

Abstract:
Since the feeding habits of the population changed considerably during the past 50 years, with a higher consumption of animal foods, the number of people with cardio-vascular diseases increased in a worryingly manner. This created a constant pressure on the national budget for social insurances. The eggs have a particular place among the foods that supply essential nutrients for the humans, but the hen egg is perceived by the consumers as being rather unhealthy because of its high cholesterol. Within this context, the decrease of the hen egg cholesterol and the improvement of the feeding quality of the eggs, in general, is a priority for the poultry research. For this food with outstanding feeding qualities, readily available, the reduction of the cholesterol level might not just protect or improve the health state of the consumers, but will also produce economic-financial benefits because the reticence of the consumers will decrease and thus the demand for consumer eggs will increase.
The project aimed to develop innovative feeding solutions based on natural local resources, which to decrease the egg cholesterol. Such kind of egg is something new for the Romanian market; it represents a clear way of transforming ideas into innovative products with potential on the real market. A functional food is obtained by decreasing the egg cholesterol, through nutrition and using friendly feeding solutions, which has significant implications for a higher food safety and security.
The project consortium consists of S.C. AVICOLA BUCURESTI S.A.(CO), the National Research-Development Institute for Animal Biology and Nutrition – IBNA Baloteşti (P1), the National Research-Development Institute for Industrial Ecology - ECOIND Bucuresti (P2) and a SMED - SC Marnews Consulting SRL (P3) which produces feeding crops.
The general objectives of the project are:
Development and homologation of innovative feeding solutions for laying hens, which to allow the production of low cholesterol eggs, within the context of the Romanian market
Production, on the basis of in-depth interdisciplinary researches, of a functional food available for a broad category of consumers, with a role in maintaining the health state of the consumers and in preventing the onset of nutrition-related diseases (obesity, cardiovascular diseases, etc.). This will likely decrease the social costs for human health care by promoting a natural consumer food
Production of eggs using friendly feeding solutions, while ensuring animal welfare, consumer safety and environmental protection.
Promoting a partnership in them field of scientific research between two economic units and two national research institutes interested to diversify their production on the basis of sound scientific studies and as a means to penetrate and remain on the Romanian market.
With this view, the project will run interdisciplinary research activities going deep into the research topic, with the purpose to find solutions applicable to the problem of interest.
By its purpose, objectives and structure of the consortium, the project fits the requirements of the Program INNOVATION (PN-II-IN-DPST-2012-1), field of Agriculture, food safety and security, having an innovative character, market potential and social usefulness.
