Abstract:
Land degradation is a complex environmental disturbance acting via multiple pathways, which, to date, have been investigated in an isolated (unilateral) manner, focused on singular (individual) degradation processes. This project proposes an integrating (unifying) scientific analysis of the multiple processes present in European agricultural environments, by considering 12 major processes (water erosion, wind erosion, soil organic carbon loss, soil salinization, soil acidification, soil compaction, soil nutrient imbalances, soil pollution via pesticides, soil pollution via heavy metals, vegetation degradation, groundwater decline and aridity) that affect agricultural lands in 40 continental countries. The methodological approach of the present project allows the geospatial modelling, for the first time, of multiple convergent degradation processes, which act in synergy and generate a wide range of negative effects continentally, i.e. they lower agricultural productivity, amplify climate change, and jeopardize governmental sustainable development objectives. The expected results of the detailed investigation of agricultural land multi-degradation have a multidimensional importance for current European policies, which aim to control land degradation and ensure food security on the continent. Also, the expected complex results can be a valuable informational support for policies intended to combat climate change and implement sustainable development, two essential conditions for Europe's socio-economic stability and prosperity. This triple positive impact of the project was designed to be as effective as possible, by establishing multiple vectors for disseminating results to various policymakers or stakeholders active in European agriculture.

Abstract:
PHITO introduces a groundbreaking digital instrument meant to meet the needs of small farmers that currently do not benefit from the digital innovation used mainly by large farmers. The platform holds the goal of reducing the digital divide between the two categories of farmers, by providing free farming consultancy based on spatial data, and by consolidating the social networks; all within the local farming system. This project aims to highlights the scientific aspects that complement the activities specific to PHITO. The collection of data related to the needs of the small and medium farmers in the Northeast of Romania will be done through questionnaires, interviews, workshops etc. The statistical processing of the data will allow for the identification of the connections between the particularities of the farmers/farms, their level of vulnerability to natural hazards, and their perception of the risks specific to farming.

Abstract:
Landslides occupies 18% of the area of the Moldavian Plateau (a hilly
area which represents 10% of the country, and over 10% of the
population), being a hazard and risk for human society and the
environment of the study area. The age of these landslides is
predominantly Holocene, without being able to exclude some upper
Pleistocene age. Dry climate, both during the Holocene period and today
has allowed keeping the morphology of landslide events with different
magnitudes, which generally show a decrease in magnitude to the
current period, and the reactivation of fossil landslides at their scarps
and landslide bodies. In order to forecast the evolution and temporal
frequency of landsliding phenomena in this area is very important to
establish a temporal magnitude-frequency curve, which will improve the
current model of evolution and enable landslide hazard and subsequent
risk assessments. An improved temporal resolution is crucial for
revealing the link between the intensity of the landslide phenomenon
and the holocene, antropocene and future climate change. This project
proposes the use of various methods (radiocarbon dating,
dendrocronological dating of lanfdslide reactivation, multi-temporal
mapping using remote sensing images, cataloging information
concerning historical landslides and their effects, and the mapping of
these events) that can reveal with a better resolution the temporal
frequency curve of landslides in the Holocene and Antropocene and
their evolution model. This curve, in association with the spatial
inventory of landslides and the spatial susceptibility derived from it, will
allow the estimation of landslide hazard, a major step to address the
landslide risk assessment for this area.

Abstract:
The project develops a new type of electronic product with a high impact in education and tourism. The main users envisioned are high school pupils/students or tourists visiting Romania. The technology makes heavy use of natural language processing, web cartography, web mapping, mixed reality techniques and ambient intelligence/ubiquitous computing. The project invents a continuous self-sustained activity combining research, education and industry. The language research feeds tools and applications targeting toponyms contained in educational and touristic materials, localising them on 2D and 3D hypermaps and putting them in correlation with the reader’s location and related data. The toponyms can be supplemented with different type of information, diagrams or any graphic related materials. If the school book covers the topic of physical geography, the localisation on a general map will be supplemented with thematic maps (geologic, landform, climate maps), and associated thematic information. As for the tourist guide, up-to-date information regarding the planning of the trip, accommodation, etc., which is not covered by the guide will be displayed on the map.
A number of applications and web services will be built on top of the processed texts, some offered to the data providers with the intention to help them augment the number of consumers of those books. A MappedBook is a book connected with locations/events in the real or virtual world and sensible to the instantaneous location (as seized by the mobile/tablet) of a reader. The information made available could possibly be different depending on the moment and the place the reader happens to be. For instance, if the user reads in the guide about a museum and her/his momentary place happens to be in its proximity, the system will try to find out from the web the museum’s open hours. Then, in case there is still time for a visit, it will signal the user about this possibility. Moreover, with the help of mixed reality technologies, the user’s tablet or smart phone will act as a window through which she/he can see, superposed on an image captured from the real world, the position of different targets.
The providers of primary textual data are media players and editing houses, which, based on written agreements, shall contribute their linguistic resources (electronic forms of manuals and travelling guides) to the partners in this project.
