Abstract:
The general objective of the DANUBIUS-RO project is the construction, equipping and operationalization of the Romanian components of the pan-European distributed research infrastructure DANUBIUS-RI dedicated to river-sea systems in order to transfer knowledge to stakeholders. DANUBIUS-RI project was accepted on the ESFRI 2016 Roadmap and is the only ESFRI project introduced on the Roadmap by Romania and coordinated by our country. DANUBIUS-RO is addressed to the entire international research community and will bring multiple benefits to Romanian research and the socio-economic environment . This creates a national hub for innovation and transfer of advanced knowledge and technologies in the field of research dedicated to effects of climate changes on large river-sea systems, with a focus on transition areas. DANUBIUS-RO project transfers research results to the economic environment through a partnership with 10 SMEs in order to develop viable innovative economic solutions.

Abstract:
The project proposes the cultivation of selected halophytes species on salt-affected soils with the aims of developing new value chains from obtained biomass.
The work will be conducted on the monitoring the degree of soil purification, the yield of biomass and seeds, and their chemical composition.
Obtained biomass will be investigated on the possibilities of extracting fibres to produce green composites, sugars for fermentative processes (bioethanol production), active biomolecules and micronutrients for developing new pharmaceutics and/or nutrceutics, oils from seeds for sustainable biodiesel synthesis. Waste resulted after extraction or pretreatment processes are further transformed into bio-based products (briquets, etc.). Process efficiency in terms of biomass production, salt-affected soil remediation, biomass conversion, materials and energy demand is the core activity for each involved step of the developed integrated technology targeting the optimal solution for ensuring overal sustainability.
Thus, HaloSYS project proposes an applied research work with a high knowledge transfer potential as alternative economic solution on bringing back into use for agricultural the farmland damaged by saltwater during coastal flooding, by the intensive agriculture practices or under the pressure of climate changes (aridisation phenomena).
Two SME’s are involved in life cycle assessment of biomass cultivation, soil quality management and biomass transformation technologies, as well as the evaluation of reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture. Abstract:
During the last years, our research team studied collagen-chitosan membranes with and without silver proving their effect in enhancing antibacterial activity. The bactericidal action was more evident in the Escherichia coli case. The experimental study continued with the collagen-chitosan membranes and immobilized alkaline phosphatase (ALP), their haemolytic properties and cells viability being better than that registered on the simple collagen or chitosan membranes. Starting from our published data, this project represents a continuity of the biotechnological process for developing new membranes with immobilized protein that will be materialized as experimental TRL3 demonstrator. We intend to find a proper technique for improving the enzymatic activity of chitosan membranes for tissue engineering by adding different metal ions. The structural and morphological characteristics, mechanical properties, swelling degree, and contact angle of the membranes will be studied to find suitable formulation for use in therapy. The optimal concentration of Mg+2 to activate or inhibit the ALP activity and its influence on the cell adhesion and proliferation on obtained membranes will be achieved. The in vitro biodegradability using bacterial collagenase (Clostridium histolyticum) and haemocompatibility of the obtained membranes will be tested. Taking into account that incorporation of metal ions like Cu+2, Zn+2 or Ag+ can improve the antimicrobial property, we intend to find a specific metal ion for increasing the antimicrobial activity maintaining in the same time a high biocompatibility. At the end of this project we intend to submit a patent application.

Abstract:
This proposal aims to adopt a systemic eco-innovative approach addressing at least two innovations: improving the combustion of low-volatile coals and controlling the SO2 removal by coupled and optimised physical and chemical proceedings. The project also aims combining technological innovation by strengthening the participation of interdisciplinary research team. The involved team estimates that such an approach can foster new forms of collaboration between end-users, producers and researchers.
In particular, our proposal develops a mathematical model by using the experimental and demonstration work on new integrated clean burning system, which will be able to raise the predictability of value adding solutions advancement. New business models can be developed, able to foster new services, consumption and production patterns in the transition to the newest EU concept of circular economy.
From this point of view, the proposal includes an activity that outline basis for business plan which can be developed further after the implementation of the project plan.
Flue gas desulfurization based on integrated technology allows also the obtaining high quality of co-products that can be used as raw materials in different fields, which led to competitive technologies that can be widely-used. Thus, this project will be an experimental study setting the behaviours of SO2-treatment system with respect to the main operating parameters using a fractional factorial plan of experimentation, which give the opportunity of establishing correlations at the end of project.
