Abstract:
The project proposes the transform the collection of photographs of early 20th century architecture (Art Nouveau and Modernism across Europe) gathered by the applicant over about 30 years of travel, into a database by answering the research question on how threats from the hazards of earthquake, flood and fire can be answered taking into account the local culture in the European countries covered, for buildings from a period when the architecture styles were global already that time. For this purpose digital humanities methods of image annotation (including architectural volumentric analysis) and mapping are employed. Apart of the mapping which takes also the form of story maps, being thus in dialogue with literature analysis methods of the relationship between traditional and modern in crisis times, also online exhibitions will be created. The subject is innovative as only recently the role of humanities in the fields of history and art history started to deal with the subject of catastrophes, following social sciences which entered this field of engineering and natural sciences. With this aim evaluation criteria will be developed considering the decisions which can be taken to prioritise the retrofit interventions depending on the geographic positions of the buildings. The analysis methods of philosophy of materials and technology history of these architecture objects are important, the theory of the shape from the time, but also phenomenology and the philosophy of Deleuze.

Abstract:
The habitat is a special-functional network where the home – as a basic structure coexists with the complementary public structures, commercial, educational, health and leisure facilities. The configuration of the habitat is an expression of the geoclimatic, social-politics and religious determinations of each community as a result of its organic development. The brutal destruction of the habitat as a result of communist demolition and multi-hazard exposure represents one of the major losses and threats to Romanian capital Bucharest.
Urban blocks of the central protected area are exposed to multiple hazards and need strategies for risk mitigation.
The case study area will be located in a central protected zone with a lot of patrimony habitat adjacent to the major axis E-W of Bucharest, in proximity of the Parliament Palace.
Which was traumatized by earlier interventions during the dictatorship of Ceausescu and is therefore inhomogenous.
Regarding the protection of architectural, urban, historic and natural environment values as a whole, a maximum level of protection was recommended.
Diminishing multi-hazard risk through architectural, structural and urban planning in this area for: buildings, building proximities, urban sector, locality, region-territory area is a major task.
Investigation and mapping of the characteristics specific for hazard of the location, the exposed risk elements, their vulnerability and the resulted risk (direct and indirect losses), as well as establishing the accepted risk and the identification of the secure habitat typology with patrimonial identity for urban development and post-disaster reconstruction.
The research is proposing the scientific substantiation of some management operations for the reduction of disaster risk of the built space and the space under post-disaster reconstruction with keeping the continuity and specificity of the urban habitat, in order to preserve the feeling of civic affiliation.

Abstract:
As early as 1997, half of the Globe population has lived in cities, and this percentage will increase continuously. Planet Earth will become an urban environment. A high level of vulnerability to natural instabilities characterizes cities, by definition fragile socio-economic systems, creating premises for multiple malfunctions and risks. Therefore, the mitigation of urban systems vulnerability to environmental instabilities will result in significant reductions of the costs in case of natural disasters occurrence. The objective of the project is of maximum novelty in research on the city of Bucharest and aims to evaluate environmental vulnerabilities patterns in a time-space frame, due to natural and anthropogenic factors. The objective will be achieved via diachronic cartography and radar interferometry (InSAR) techniques, correlated with declining groundwater levels (due to groundwater extraction) and construction. Urban change detection maps created based on TanDEM-X data, corroborated with complementary data including historical and thematic maps and orthophoto images, and a previous map of deformation based on ERS-1/2 data, will create the core of information required in studying past deformations and current dynamics of Bucharest.
Results will capture the space-time evolution history of the city and the vulnerability of natural support, the consequences of the exploitation of the aquifer layers and the effect in the built environment.

Abstract:
'In Nouvelles Impressions d'Architecture, Libeskind (1998) writes 'When architecture no longer deals with Space, all transactions, in which the container and the contained twisted together […] have come to an end'. A systemic analysis can be performed morphologically, functionally or dynamically. The connection between the appearance and the generation of the form, human perception and experience, the processional nature of any system, is considered. The buildings of the Modern Avantgarde were raised during a very short time span of 20, sometimes just 10 years, in several different parallelly coexisting styles, coexisting also with newest developments in music, arts, physics, philosophy, economic and social theory and industrialisation. One of the nuclei of the movement was built by the housing programme, particularly suitable to foster innovation. While in more industrialised countries ways to solve social problems were seeked for, in the other European countries the new possibilities were seen as an opportunity to give a more prosperous image to cities, by raising density with blocks of flats for the middle class. The study will concentrate on European features of building stock which have not been covered by previous studies, namely the spatio-functional research of the interior organisation of the dwelling in the blocks of flats for the middle class. The study proposes a heterogeneous model in which a zone has instead of a unique function a unique vocation. Zoning results as a structural product in the superposition and interpenetration of textures (sub-systems of the life-frame elements able to respond to the functionally requested situation) of morphologic elements, thanks to the co-operation process of human activities. There is a complex zoning with operational and organisational value. As case studies will be considered: - Milan 1920-1940; - Bucharest 1920-1940; - Athens 1919-1939; - forerunners of and Avant-Garde in Budapest 1896-1939.'
