Abstract:
The 16th century Romanian Psalters are among the oldest Romanian texts. While there is not a consensus among the scholars over their translation initiative, which was attributed to Hussites, Catholics, Reformers, or Orthodox, it is generally accepted that the prototype translation, from Old Slavonic unidentified sources, was subjected to multiple revisions, resulting in related versions, of which four manuscripts and three printed texts from the 16th survived; the difficulty of establishing the Slavonic source came from the fact that the Slavonic Psalter itself has a complicated and less investigated textual tradition. Some scholars advanced a Latin or even a Hungarian source hypothesis, but these theses need a further demonstration.
Although the oldest Romanian Psalters have been studied for more than a century, their translation process and practice, sources, relations, and reception are not entirely clarified. The main causes were the lack of a tool facilitating their exhaustive philological and linguistic comparison, the absence of a bible-philology related analysis, a fragmentary knowledge about the sources and their own tradition and even the lack of editions.
Bringing together these texts in an aligned and morphological annotated corpus and comparatively studying their language, the project aims at re-examining the 16th century Romanian Psalters with an emphasis on their translation practices and on the relations between them and with their sources.

Abstract:
The road towards a new synthesis concerning the history of the relations between the Romanian Principalities and Mount Athos is almost finalised. Until then, though, we propose a new project, with the following objective: the valorisation and editing of the Romanian documents within the archives of Mount Athos monasteries and of the documents concerning these connections preserved in the archives of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the study of manuscripts and other precious assets of Romanian origin, kept at Mount Athos, the research of the travels made by the Athonite monks to Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania, and of the Romanian pilgrimages to the Holy Mountain. Through this project, we wish to publish integrally the documents from the Romanian archives of the Athonite monasteries Iviron and St. Paul, to begin a systematic editing of the immense Romanian archive within the Vatopedi monastery, and to continue the valorisation of the historical records preserved in the library of the Hilandar monastery. At the same time, we wish to publish a volume of Romanian-Athonite documents kept in the archives and libraries of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, from mid-17th century to 1831-1832. We will study the travels of the monks from Mount Athos and of the Constantinople patriarchs to the Romanian Principalities, as well as the pilgrimages of Romanians to the Holy Mountain: this ecclesiastical and cultural phenomenon intensified from the second half of the 17th century

Abstract:
The expansion of Catholicism and Protestantism in Eastern Europe in the first half of the 17th century determined a strong reaction of the Orthodox clergy, which led to the emergence of numerous Slavonic linguistic instruments, among which the Slavonic-Ukrainian Lexicon by Pamvo Berynda (Lexikon slavenorosskij i imenь tlьkovanije, Kiev, 1627). Considering the close relations between the Romanian states and Ukraine, Berynda’s lexicon had a strong impact in the Romanian space, which resulted in six Slavonic-Romanian dictionaries, all manuscript. Although they are the oldest Romanian bilingual dictionaries, and thus of great importance for Romanian culture, only one of these (The Lexicon of Mardarie, 1649) has been edited (1900); as regards the others, there have been initiated various investigations, claiming the need for their comparative study, in order to establish the links between them, as well as their relation with the source.
The project proposes an online comparative edition of these Slavonic-Romanian lexicons. We will start from each entry from Berynda’s lexicon, and we will record the equivalents and/ or the explanations it receives in the Romanian lexicons. The lexicons will be displayed online, in a digital comparative edition, with an interface that will allow complex queries, combining the information available in lexicons and searching for parts of words. The comparative approach will allow establishing the relations between them, whether they are independent or copies of the same source. This online edition will be a very useful tool, easy to reach by lexicographers, specialists interested in old Romanian corpora and other aspects pertaining to their exploitation and will make available to those interested, as open access corpus, this important and almost unknown part of the Romanian cultural heritage.

Abstract:
The Romanian philology lacks a systematic study on techniques for translating proper names into Romanian. In the context of a significant cultural transfer via translation which revolutionized the Romanian language towards the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the next, we aim to investigate the translation practices in use for the proper names found in a series of historical and geographical texts (cca 20), in print or manuscript, translated into Romanian from new Greek, French, Italian, English, and German in the pre-modern period of literary Romanian (1780 – 1830). Based on a corpus of proper names excerpted from the selected texts, we will focus on aspects such as: the translation / transposition techniques adopted by Romanian translators, some cases of standardization, and the assimilation potential of the Romanian language. For a more detailed picture of this matter we intend to follow several sub-categories of proper names according to their incidence in our corpus: anthroponyms, toponyms, theonyms, ethnonyms, pragmatonyms, etc. In this context, research on the transposition of foreign proper names into Romanian can, along with the other aspects explored so far, add to our understanding the ways in which Romanian culture and language were integrated in the West-European culture by shifting direction from the Greek and Slavic models.

Abstract:
In accordance with one of the central directives of the European Union in the cultural field – the study and the enhancement of local, regional and national cultural heritage – our project aim is to be included with the traditional effort of the Romanian philology of recovering the ancient texts, presenting critical editions and making them accessible by putting them in circulation. Therefore, in an interdisciplinary context and by the contribution of the new and modern methods of informatics, we intend to publish a scientific edition of a text of the 17th century, of major importance for the Romanian culture: the full version of the Old Testament translated form Greek by the famous scholar Nicolae Milescu Spătarul. This version has been used to the achievement of the Bucharest Bible (1688) after being subjected to at least two successive revisions. The text is a manuscript written in Cyrillic (914 pages) and it is hosted under the number 45, by the Romanian Academy Library of Cluj-Napoca. The final product will be represented by the full text of the manuscript 45 transcribed in a phonetic interpretative key, accompanied by philological and linguistic studies, with a critical apparatus. What we specifically propose is to complete the philological processing of this manuscript text using the informatics methods specially created and put it in the scientific and cultural channel of circulation (in both print and electronic formats).
