Abstract:
The project aims at developing a sustainable and smart land-use pattern, based on a very long-term perspective. It employs a bunch of cutting-edge methods from social sciences, geography, strategic planning, natural and environmental sciences, etc. Its absolute novelty is assured by the unique combinations of the methods and the 250-year time span of past, present, and future models. Although mainly focused on rural land use and agriculture, the project's methodological findings can be extended on other land-use classes. The project's outcomes will be delivered to stakeholders for ensuring resilient agriculture and achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract:
Current climate change overlaps with a clear tendency of the human population to concentrate in cities. These combined trends increase both the exposure to weather extremes and the vulnerability of the population, forcing the authorities to adapt environmental policies aimed at increasing the resilience response of urban areas to climate change. However, in order to develop such policies, an adequate assessment of the climatic conditions inside cities is needed. For this, the current project proposes a multivariate assessment of climatic conditions based on the development of in situ observations, expeditionary measurements and the assimilation of climate information derived from satellite images for the 16 most important cities located in the North - Eastern Development region of Romania. Based on all available meteorological data (available from official observation and produced through our own observations), we also aim to describe the synoptic types that are commonly associated with extreme weather conditions in selected cities. Future climate conditions will also be estimated based on climate scenarios. These two analyzes are intended to increase the prediction of extreme weather and climate conditions, representing key elements for a sound scientific basis on which resilience policies should be based. The implementation of the project benefits from the previous experience of the team members in the field of urban climate, atmospheric circulation and climate scenarios.

Abstract:
The strategic meaning and the level of social and economic security requires a close attention on the management of underground water resources, especially since they are the main reservoir of fresh water at continental scale. Anthropogenic pressure, coupled with the current and future climate change, shows substantial changes of the groundwater – climate system. Lack of infrastructures to allow the local population, predominantly rural, a constant access to water resource, requires the use of underground water mostly with many implications on the quality and operating conditions of these. The main objectives of this project aim to: (1) identifying of the specific types of hydro-geological conditions in the Moldavian Plateau and the vulnerable areas to changes in the groundwater level; (2) application of regional climate models in the Moldavian Plateau to assess climate changes impacts on underground water resources; (3) modeling of underground water resources response to current and future climate change scenarios. The project will be implemented by a research team composed by the director of the project, four postdoctoral researchers and one PhD students.

Abstract:
In the context of the present climate changes, the increase in frequency and duration of the extreme weather events became one of the most important features of present weather condition. This project aims to a complex study of four types of extreme weather events related to air temperature and precipitation in Romania: heat waves, cold waves, wet spells, and dry spells. All of them affect large areas and have important impacts on environment and society. The main objective of the project is an integrative study on characteristics, causes, present and future trends of extreme weather events associated to air temperature and precipitation in Romania. Also, the identification of their potential impact categories on environment and society will be done. The originality of the project consists of three components: a complex statistical analysis of the four types of extreme weather events over the period 1961-2014; climate modeling of the extreme weather phenomena considered until 2100 at regional and local scale by using downscaling techniques based on global and regional climate models; annual and seasonal classification of the synoptic conditions responsible for the occurrence of the extreme weather events considered. The last topic will result in an atlas of extreme weather events related to air temperature and precipitation.

Abstract:
The project objective is conceiving, design, realization and testing of a complete and complex system devoted to continuously monitoring the displacement under three axes of the geomorfological structures and of other specific parameters in order to detect and monitor landslides by using smart sensors based on special micro and nanostructured materials and advanced information processing techniques. The system is able to automatically acquire data on the filed, locally processing information and storing and remotely data transmitting by means of a wireless sensor communication network to a central server. The system comprises three parts: i) instrumentation part, ii) communication part and iii) data processing and user interface part. The instrumentation part consists of a complex set of new transducers devoted to measure very small spatial soil displacements, pore water pressure, conductivity and temperature at different levels under ground. The communication part is a wireless sensor network working under protocols specially designed for this application. The third part is the database continuously updated available for all users by means of a web interface. The project will have a coordinator and 4 partners from which one is a medium enterprise. The project activities are divided into four phases: the first phase devoted to building the instrumentation part, the second, to laboratory testing and calibration of all sensing devices, the third to system assembly and to realization and testing of wireless sensor network and the fourth to testing the monitoring system on the field working under real conditions. There are previewed a series of concrete deliverables materialized on four new types of sensors, the complex smart transducer, the sensor network, the assembly system ready to be implemented on the field and a database contained date collected on a high natural hazard risk area and a user friendly interface on which people may watch on the web the phenomenon.

Abstract:
The present proposal addresses the domain of solar-cloud cover relationship, a hot topic of the equally hot debate about the cause and evolution of climate change. In order to disentangle between effects of cosmic rays and of solar UV radiation on cloud cover, we plan to carry on a comprehensive study that will use modeling techniques, advanced methods of correlation and statistical analysis. Careful, detailed and well-oriented analysis will allow indentifying patterns, length and coherence of correlation, various characteristics of relationships, that will contribute either to inferring the mechanisms by which the Sun may affect the terrestrial cloud cover or to excluding some hypothesis. The major objective of the present work is to build a comprehensive picture of the role played by solar proxies (CRII, UVI) in terrestrial cloud cover. Specific objectives: identification of geographical areas with robust correlations using additional knowledge about other external influences; analysis of cloud composition influence on solar – cloud cover link; understanding the cause/mechanism for UVI, respectively CRII, link to cloud cover; analysis of seasonal variation of global, geographical distribution of the correlations solar proxies - cloud cover; investigation of possible intervening effect of internal climatic factors (common climatological characteristics, internal climatic oscillations, teleconnections) in solar – cloud links.
