Abstract:
The rapid expansion of the network based on some dominant scientific arguments and the impact of the imposed restrictions on the local and regional economies have determined the activation of numerous environmental conflicts in Natura 2000 sites. The high percentage of network surface (22,68% of country’s surface) makes the competition between the conservation and development as complex, especially because the sites were declared without the consultation of the public. Moreover, Natura 2000 sites have inherited many conflicts related to the resources depletion, socio-economic problems, unclear institutional mandates regarding land ownership, existing threats or some negative perceptions. Energy production, water, forest and non-renewable resources exploitation are just a few of the environmental conflicts causes from these areas. The overall objective of the project is to develop a methodology for the management and resolution of environmental conflicts characteristic for Natura 2000 sites. This will be achieved starting to the analysis of the contextual indicators with potential of activating the environmental conflicts and the assessment of the threats which will allow the identification of potential areas of environmental conflicts concentration and their specificities in Natura 2000 sites. It is envisaged the publication of minimum 3 articles in journals with a cumulative impact factor of 8. The project will increase the number of full-time researchers under 35 years old.

Abstract:
The aim of this project is to initiate innovative scientific research on the environmental, ecogeomorphological, social and economic specificities of the urban fringe zone, in a post-communist context. The project outcomes will contribute to development of new instruments for environmental management systems at the interaction line between rural and urban zones, will provide prediction model and service, transferable to European level, for land use and administration in relation with water, soil and air pollution and will offer alternative strategies for ecosystem health and population wellbeing.
The project has four objectives: 1) to categorize the peri-urban land use in relation to current policies and practices, in the light of the rapid socio-economic transformations during the post communist period, accomplished by assessing the degree of progress in the urban fringes from an environmental, social and economic standpoint; 2) to identify the major processes, at coupled nature-human systems, that induce rapid environmental, social and economic changes in the urban fringe zone, which attempts to holistically evaluate the human–nature component in peri-urban zones, by acquiring environmental, ecogeomorphological, social and economic data; 3) to elaborate the prediction model for environmental, social and economic changes in the post communist context. This will generate a prediction model for the changes in peri-urban areas considering the interconnectedness between environmental, social and economic factors, aiding to development of decision support tools, prediction of future alternative strategies and to the creation of best practices plans; 4) to transfer the prediction model and scenarios to decision makers. The prediction model and support decision tool will be taken by the SME partner and transformed into an innovative environmental consultancy service, available on the market for implementation at national and international scale.

Abstract:
Human settlements are continuously exposed to the risk of incompatible land uses (ILUs). Their appearance at local and regional scales often generates territorial conflicts, with projection in the social, economical and environmental fields. The project applies to representative human settlements from Romania methods analysing ILUs typologies (matrix model, logistic regression, Delphi methods, and questionnaires) and conflicts generated by them (multicriterion assessment, agglomerative hierarchical clustering). The key result of the project is represented by the development of prediction models for the environmental impact generated by ILUs in human settlements. Assessments will also allow the establishment of emplacement rules for the main categories of functional areas, reducing to minimum ILUs.
