Abstract:
The road towards a new synthesis concerning the history of the relations between the Romanian Principalities and Mount Athos is almost finalised. Until then, though, we propose a new project, with the following objective: the valorisation and editing of the Romanian documents within the archives of Mount Athos monasteries and of the documents concerning these connections preserved in the archives of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the study of manuscripts and other precious assets of Romanian origin, kept at Mount Athos, the research of the travels made by the Athonite monks to Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania, and of the Romanian pilgrimages to the Holy Mountain. Through this project, we wish to publish integrally the documents from the Romanian archives of the Athonite monasteries Iviron and St. Paul, to begin a systematic editing of the immense Romanian archive within the Vatopedi monastery, and to continue the valorisation of the historical records preserved in the library of the Hilandar monastery. At the same time, we wish to publish a volume of Romanian-Athonite documents kept in the archives and libraries of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, from mid-17th century to 1831-1832. We will study the travels of the monks from Mount Athos and of the Constantinople patriarchs to the Romanian Principalities, as well as the pilgrimages of Romanians to the Holy Mountain: this ecclesiastical and cultural phenomenon intensified from the second half of the 17th century

Abstract:
This project has its rationale in the reality of the military occupations of Moldavia and Wallachia (1769-1774; 1787-1792; 1806-1812; 1821; 1828-1829; 1848-1851; 1853-1857; 1916-1918) for period of time chosen. The specific scientific objectives are the following ones: a) to historicise the concept of military occupation, thus introducing the Romanian case into a broader historical debate about European security; b) studying the cameral practices, with a special focus on public health, administration and territorial construction, as results from concepts like PolizeistaatandKameralismus; c) branching out into new areas such as the interaction between history of ideas and international history; d) analysing and dissecting the political relations between occupants and occupiers; e) last, but not least, the realisation of a prosopography of military occupations included in this research proposal. The study of the military occupations of Moldavia and Walachia means providing indispensable insights into the history of the making of modern Romania.

Abstract:
The preoccupation of the scholars from the Romanian Provinces for the history of the peoples from other geographical areas has manifested itself since the medieval period of our historiography. But, in the second half of the 18th century, as the ideas and concepts of the Western Enlightenment exert a stronger and stronger influence on the Romanian culture, one may identify a shift from the chronographs and internal chronicles to the translation of historical writings written in Western Europe, with serious documentation and scientific arguments, based on the principles of the rationalism rather than on the divine intervention. Towards the end of the 18th century, the historical writings tend to become a usual reading of the Romanian intellectuals, playing simultaneously various roles: an informative and educational role through detailed descriptions of exotic lands and cultures or an informative role by depicting recent events, the role of building the public opinion in the direction of the idea of an enlightened monarch in its Habsburg variant or a propagandistic role with a strong ideological and political component.
The goal of the present project is to deliver an overview of the historical writings translated in the Romanian Provinces from German in the time of the Enlightenment (1770-1840) and to highlight the importance of these writings for the integration of world’s history in the Romanian culture on the one hand, and, on the other, for the development and diversification of the specialized Romanian terminology (economic, legal, geographic languages, the transcription of names etc.). Through this project, the team aims to contribute to the reconstruction of the Romanian cultural landscape in these first decades of effervescence in the field of secular translations by transliterating unknown texts and to develop the concept of „cultural transfer” through a translational and textual comparative analysis of the German protographs and their Romanian translation.

Abstract:
This project approaches a topic at the border between political history and cultural history: namely, the problem of political propaganda carried out by aristocratic factions within a civil war context, exploring its forms, the circumstances it manifested itself, the motivations of the main authors and beneficiaries, and the doctrines this propaganda gave voice to. The outbreak of a civil war was always accompanied by attempts at justification, found in the propaganda of the parts in conflict, and this propaganda provides a revealing picture of an epoch's political culture. The aristocracy was, almost always, the leading element (and the most visible) in the civil wars from the chosen period, but, culturally attached to a political model which valued first and foremost the preservation of existing order, was also the most eager to justify its disruptive actions.
The chosen period, the sixteenth century, is one where political propaganda becomes particularly active, due to the printing press making possible the spread of ideas at an unprecedented scale. But the sixteenth century is also the period when the most profound religious shift in European history, the Reformation, takes place, which stimulated a radical reexamination of existing traditions, with a deeply transformative effect upon European political theories.
The chosen geographical area is France, which had been the scene, between 1562 and 1598 of one of the most violent religious civil wars of that era, and Moldavia, which did not go through similar religious struggles, but where we witness a powerful deterioration of the political stability, especially after 1538.

Abstract:
The research project we propose has as a main theme the study of a segment of the social and political elite from Moldavia – the great boyar families – separated from the rest of the boyars on the criterion of power and the ability to ensure continuity of their presence in the central institutions of the country as high rank dignitaries. Our theme focuses on the study of the interference between the quality of high rank dignitary, on the one hand, and belonging to a great family of local boyars whose prestige (identity genealogy) and heritage made it stand out from the rest of the nobility, on the other hand, in order to identify the sources of power and the extent to which great boyar families represented (or not) a political elite in itself or just an administrative oligarchy whose power depended on the will and royal favor. Identifying a balance between these aspects, according to historical sources and specifics of the era, to the way in which these great families perceived themselves and how they used to legitimize their power, allow the knowledge of the true historical profile of this part of nobility, whether these great families were the political elite, based on an interdisciplinary study that will also consider the sociological and political science analyzes regarding the study of elites, with the priority of the historical investigation and methodology. In terms of chronological range that we have in mind, it includes the entire epoch called Phanariote, i.e. from 1711-1821, divided into three stages, each with its features in terms of our project, knowing that in the second half of the eighteenth century, especially after the reforms of Constantine Mavrocordat or in periods of foreign occupation, socio-political realities underwent profound changes.

Abstract:
One of the timeframes on which historical research has not fully focused is the one between two occupation periods (1769-1774 and 1806-1812, respectively), both with carefully explored endings as a result of the territorial losses they entailed. From an ideological perspective, the main tool used by the occupying forces was the word, printed or in manuscripts, acting as new power’s main vehicle. The effects of propaganda materialized through the spreading of ideas, by their distribution under forms accessible to all, but also in mystical, eschatological codes with a strong message attuned to religious feeling. The proclamations, memoirs, prefaces, legends, stories, books with ‘cherry-picked’ topics, projects, printed or hand-written, circulating and being read in endemic, even conspirational media illustrate a cultural phenomenon so intense during war and occupation, especially over inter-war periods. Our project’s main purpose is to regard these first-hand sources critically, to carefully, synoptically analyse them and gather the results in a volume and in a few other studies where several unpublished materials will be edited.

Abstract:
On our path towards discovering the Romanian treasure on Mount Athos, we propose to highlight and edit the documents and manuscripts from the Zographou and Docheiariou monasteries, which are part of the largest documentary deposit for the medieval and modern history of the Romanian Principalities outside the Romanian borders. From a scientific perspective, the study of Romanian archives on Mount Athos has a great importance, being one of the few sources that could actually bring new information on the Romanians’ history and on the history of the entire Eastern Christendom. By publishing all the documents within two new Romanian archives on Mount Athos: the archive in the Zographou Monastery and the archive in the Docheiariou Monastery, many fields of the Romanian and south-eastern European history will be enriched. Concerning the Zographou Monastery, we will also study the Romanian manuscripts preserved in the monastery’s library, and other testimonies attesting the Romanian donations for this Athonite monastery, because they have been scarcely studied or simply ignored thus far. This way, we will help complete the international bibliography concerning Mount Athos, making the contribution of Romanian researchers more visible. We will also develop an important centre of Romanian–Athonite research in Iaşi. The studies, articles and papers published highlighting the great number of unpublished documents and manuscripts from the archives and libraries of the Zographou and Docheiariou monasteries will help reveal the role played by Romanians on Mount Athos and the role played by the Holy Mountain in our history. After their publication, the Romanian historical research will be significantly more present in the international historical bibliography regarding the role and place of Mount Athos in the history of the Orthodox Church. In the following bibliography of Mount Athos, Romanian researchers will count much more contributions compared to the existing bibliographies.

Abstract:
The archives of the monasteries on Mount Athos represent the largest documentary treasure for the medieval and modern history of the Romanian Principalities outside the Romanian borders. This project continues older research preoccupations regarding the publication of this documentary treasure and it has two major objectives: 1. to publish two volumes of documents from the archives of Simonopetra Monastery; 2. to publish a volume of studies on the history of the relations between the Romanian Principalities and Mount Athos (in international languages). Taking into account the importance of this monastery in Mount Athos and the exceptional archive kept there, the publication of the two volumes will contribute to a better knowledge of the relations between the Romanian Principalities and Mount Athos. It will also clear out less known aspects regarding the history of the peoples in Eastern Europe. The volume of studies aims to be a review of the research on the relations between the Romanians and Mount Athos, our intention being to open the way for future research possibilities. By achieving these objectives, we will contribute to completing the international bibliography concerning Mount Athos, making the contribution of Romanians researchers more visible. We will also develop an important centre of Romanian–Athonite research in Romania.
