Abstract:
The overuse of glyphosate (Gly), a nonselective and broad-spectrum herbicide widely used to control weeds in grain crops, has induced issues, such as contamination of surface water, decreased soil fertility, adverse effects on soil microbiota and possible incorporation in food chains. The maximum residue thresholds of Gly are established at the very low concentration, especially for drinking water (0.1 μg/L or 0.6 nM, in European countries), therefore there is an urgent need for sensitive and selective monitoring methods. The proposed project (GLYSens) will develop and validate a sensitive, selective and fast responsive sensor based on shear horizontal (SH) Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) device for the detection of Gly from water samples (collected from basin of Olt river, the most impacted region in Romania). The high sensitivity of the sensor will be assured by both design and piezoelectric substrate, together with the guiding layer (SiO2, polymer or ZnO), while the selectivity will be provided by using thin layers of molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs), generally considered as artificial mimics that are comparable to the natural receptor, providing more stable and low-cost recognition elements. Since the water samples are very complex matrices, the selectivity study is a must and for this, GLYSens will investigate several possible interfering species, such as different herbicides, organic contaminants or metal ions, known to coexist in the water matrix. Also, more than 50 water samples will be analyzed using the developed MIP-SAW sensor, and for the validation of the method, the obtained results will be compared with the results obtained from one standard method (Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry).

Abstract:
The main scope of this project proposal is to develop new technologies for the removal of legacy and emerging contaminants (organochlorine insecticides, brominated flame retardants) from wastewater and contaminated groundwater using advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), iron-based nanoparticles (FeS and Fe0) and anaerobic biodegradation processes. The anaerobic biodegradation, but especially the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are very useful techniques in removal of the above mentioned pollutants from wastewater since, comparing with other treatments techniques, both techniques could effectively eliminate organic compounds in aqueous phase, rather than collecting or transferring pollutants into another phase. A sono-photo-reactor will be setup up to perform the sono-photo-Fenton processes of the key target organic contaminants compounds (HCHs, PBDE-209, HBCDs, and HCDBCO) as a laboratory technology for the treatment of wastewater and a bioreactor will be setup up to develop advanced laboratory technologies for the biodegradation of the key target compounds. Therefore, this project is aiming to upgrade an experimental laboratory demonstrator (TRL 3) to a laboratory validated technology (TLR4) by validating both the sono-photo-reactor and bioreactor technologies.

Abstract:
The project aims to develop an advanced methodology for assessing the impact of organic and inorganic contaminants in the water-sediment-biota matrix chain, by
correlating their mobility with stable isotopes. Chemical pollution of surface waters is a threat to both the aquatic environment, with effects such as acute and
chronic toxicity in aquatic organisms, accumulation of pollutants in the ecosystem, habitat disappearance and loss of biodiversity, as well as human health. Pollution
with organic and inorganic pollutants is mainly due to wastewater discharges from point sources or emissions from diffuse sources containing non-synthetic
pollutants (heavy metals) and / or synthetic pollutants (organic micropollutants). They do not degrade, but persist in the environment, and accumulate in animal and
plant tissues, thus presenting long-term risks to human health and ecosystems. Due to the harmful effects on organisms, the pursuit of organic contaminants with
accumulation potential, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), brominated flame retardants, perfluorinated compounds, pharmaceuticals (which are not
removed during the water treatment process) and their metabolites in the body of water is becoming more and more important.

Abstract:
Valorification of the Romanian wine-growing potential, in order to obtain sustainable competitive advantages in foreign markets, requires the development and promotion of the identity of Romanian wines, based on analytical investigations certifying quality and natural chemical composition of the wines. Consumers, regulatory bodies and winemakers are interested to have reliable and cost-effective analytical tools and information to allow the authentication of wines. The assessment of high quality wines authenticity in terms of varietal and vintage confirmation is a major concern that has gained a lot of interest internationally since these wines has always been subjected to false declaration of origin. SCREEN-WINE project aims to develop and validate new rapid alternative analytical strategies employing more accessible techniques, like screening techniques for a reliable, high-throughput and cost-effective wine varietal and vintage authentication. Thus, fingerprinting of wine organic compounds by rapid screening techniques like spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR) and “electronic tongues” employing electrochemical sensors/biosensors combined with appropriate pattern recognition systems will be performed. In this respect, we consider that it is crucial to provide essential data in order to achieve several milestones including the establishment of references databases with qualitative and quantitative information of wine organic constituents, estimating the variation of spectral and analytical data observed by varietal and vintage factors, which can be compared with the variation due to the possibility to add legally up to 15% of another wine without any declaration.

Abstract:
The assessment of honey authenticity is a major concern that has gained a lot of interest internationally since the honey has always been subjected to various fraudulent practices which become more sophisticated in the present day. Consumers, regulatory bodies and beekeepers are interested to have reliable analytical tools and information to allow the detection of adulterated honey. SAHE-HONEY project aims to develop and validate new rapid alternative analytical strategies employing more accessible and sensitive instrumental techniques (fingerprinting techniques) for a reliable, high-throughput and cost-effective identification of honey adulteration, even for fine adulteration. Authenticity of different floral honeys in terms of adulteration identification will be investigated by fingerprinting low-molecular organic compounds responsible for the therapeutic effect of honey (phenolic compounds, organic acids, vitamins and volatiles) and sugars profile by HPLC, GC-MS, UV-VIS and NMR techniques and verified using the isotopes signature (δ13C and (D/H)I) by IRMS and SNIF-NMR techniques. In this respect, we consider that it is crucial to provide essential data in order to achieve several milestones including the establishment of references database, estimating the variation of honey bioactive constituents and isotopic parameters due to botanic and geographic factors, which can be compared with the variation observed by direct or indirect adulteration of honey. Using the proposed methodologies, direct and indirect adulteration experiments with different sugar syrups (from corn, cane and beet) will be conducted in order to highlight the minimal amount of incorporated sugar syrup from which the bioactive compounds profile and honey biochemical and sensorial properties are definitively modified.

Abstract:
During the treatment of the raw water, from the reaction of NOM with the chloride, the disinfection products appear and among them trihalomethanes (THM), a group of volatile organic compounds dangerous for the human health. Water is a source for Ca, Mg, Na, K and other benefic substances for the organism, but sometimes it carries also undesired elements. There are substances which can harm over a threshold concentration. Others create problems if they are in too small concentration. Finally, there are substances that can harm at any concentration. Our project aims the metals and the dissolved organic matter, particularly the heavy metals. Among these, cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) are considered to be of the most harmful.
Systematic observations will be carried out, on a long time period, in correlation with the climatic conditions. Determinations of traces of REE solvated in water will be correlated with the study of their concentration in soil. Investigations will be done on the meteoric water in order to establish the way of penetration of the heavy metal pollutants in water. Determinations of isotopic ratios 1H/D, 13C/12C for the dissolved carbon, 18O/16O will allow to establish the origin and the dynamics of water from the lakes used to prepare the drinking water. Determination of TOC, DOC and THM will be done simultaneously with the study of the THM formation kinetics during the disinfection process in the presence of traces of heavy metals. The scope is the determination of the mechanism leading to the penetration of elements at trace level with toxic potential in the water delivered to great urban agglomeration from the counties of Cluj and Sălaj.

Abstract:
The project aims to establish and operationalize the Competence Center for Soil Health and Food
Safety at national level, by creating public-private partnerships to obtain interdisciplinarity and skills necessary to address
the societal challenges associated with the corresponding EU mission in Horizon Europe. The target proposed by the EU
mission A Soil Deal for Europe that is “by 2030 at least 75% of all soils in the EU are healthy for food, people, nature and
climate” will be one of the objectives of the Competence Center at national level. The Centre proposed mission is to
enhance sustainable soil management and restoration at a national level as a part of a larger, more environmentally friendly
shift in both rural and urban areas by developing practical solutions, creating an important basis for future challenges
through raising societal awareness. The target of the Competence Centre focus on the research which aims to restore soil
health from non-productive land through: conservation and organic practices and biomass cultures, determining the
organic/inorganic pollutant concentration, investigating the components transfer from soil-plant-animal-food product, in
order to understand the necessity for soil health restoration activities as an important factor for life-sustaining, to research
changes and to predict future challenges, as well as to develop innovative solutions and put them in practice.
