Abstract:
The collectivization of agriculture in 1949-1962 was a central dimension of the process of the reconfiguration of the society in Communist Romania. The current project explores the political violence and the role of class struggle in the construction of the Communist regime. We focus on the process of building and improving the represive apparatus in the rural world in the process of collectivization of agriculture. We argue that research on political violence, coercion or repression is essențial for understanding the process of social engineering implemented in the rural world in the process of collectivization of agriculture. Our hypothesis is that the use of political violence in the Communist regime was closely linked to the construction of the totalitarian state and its ideological legitimacy.
Specifically, the project aims to analyse the ideological justification of the political violence in rural areas advanced by the Communist regime under the cover of the principle of class struggle, the way this ideological principle was introduced; the manner in which these policies were implemented by various institutions of the Party-State in the making, and how the tasks of the various repressive structures were divided; to gather comprehensive data on the campaing of repression against peasants; ways in the peasants reacted; and try to place the collectivization of agriculture in Romania in a comparative regional perspective.
