Abstract:
Oxytocin is a nonapeptide hormone that is synthesized in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus and is directly projected into other brain areas, where it acts as a neurotransmitter. Recently, several data have suggested that besides the classical roles in parturition and milk letdown, oxytocin could play an important part in the pathophysiology of some psychiatric disorders mainly characterized by impairments in the social functioning. In this way, in this grant we are proposing a complex interdisciplinary study, with a team of 7 PhD students and 4 Postdocs regarding the effects of oxytocin administration (peripheral vs. intranasal) in the pathophysiological manifestations of some animal models of autism, schizophrenia, anxiety and depression on rat and zebrafish, and also on the human patients. Also, we will try to understand the role of the oxidative stress in the complex effects mediated by oxytocin at the central level in the aforementioned neuropsychiatric disorders (animal models and human patients), as well as performing some genetical studies in order to see the genetic variants in genes encoding oxytocin or the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) and to better understand the genetic risk associated with the variations of OXTR in the aforementioned disorders.
