Abstract:
The DiPET project investigates models and techniques that enable distributed stream processing applications to seamlessly span and redistribute across fog and edge computing systems. The goal is to utilize devices dispersed through the network that are geographically closer to users to reduce network latency and to increase the available network bandwidth. However, the network that user devices are connected to is dynamic. For example, mobile devices connect to different base stations as they roam, and fog devices may be intermittently
unavailable for computing. In order to maximally leverage the heterogeneous compute and network resources present in these dynamic networks, the DiPET project pursues a bold approach based on transprecise computing. Transprecise computing states that computation need not always be exact and proposes a disciplined trade-off of precision against accuracy, which impacts on computational effort, energy efficiency, memory usage and communication bandwidth and latency. Transprecise computing allows to dynamically adapt the precision of computation depending on the context and available resources. This creates new dimensions to the problem of scheduling distributed stream applications in fog and edge computing environments and will lead to schedules with superior performance, energy efficiency and user experience. The DiPET project will demonstrate the feasibility of this unique approach by developing a transprecise stream processing application framework and transprecision-aware middleware. Use cases in video analytics and network intrusion detection will guide the research and underpin technology demonstrators.

Abstract:
In the last decade, a number of initiatives were crucial for enabling high-quality research - by providing e-
Infrastructure resources, application support and training - in both South East Europe (SEE) and Eastern
Mediterranean (EM). They helped reduce the digital divide and brain drain in Europe, by ensuring access to regional
e-Infrastructures to new member states, states on path to ascension, and states in European Neighborhood Policy area
– in total 14 countries in SEE and 6 in EM. This VI-SEEM proposal brings together these e-Infrastructures to build
capacity and better utilize synergies, for an improved service provision within a unified Virtual Research Environment
(VRE) for the inter-disciplinary scientific user communities in the combined SEE and EM regions (SEEM).The
overall objective is to provide user-friendly integrated e-Infrastructure platform for regional cross-border Scientific
Communities in Climatology, Life Sciences, and Cultural Heritage for the SEEM region; by linking compute, data,
and visualization resources, as well as services, models, software and tools. This VRE will provide the scientists and
researchers with the support in full lifecycle of collaborative research: accessing and sharing relevant research data,
using it with provided codes and tools to carry out new experiments and simulations on large-scale e-Infrastructures,
and producing new knowledge and data - which can be stored and shared in the same VRE. Climatology and Life
Science communities are directly relevant for Societal Challenges. The driving ambition of this proposal is to maintain
leadership in enabling e-Infrastructure based research and innovation in the region for the 3 strategic regional user
communities: supporting multidisciplinary solutions, advancing their research, and bridging the development gap with
the rest of Europe. The VI-SEEM consortium brings together e-Infrastructure operators and Scientific Communities in
a common endeavor

Abstract:
The evolutionary complexity of the Cloud ecosystem will eventually make traditional Cloud inefficient management systems. Self-organization and self-management are powerful complexity management techniques. Some of our initial simulation results using self-organization and self-optimization indicate that they can be used as a basis for a new Cloud management and delivery model capable of effectively solving large-scale problems. Our preliminary work has focused on promoting access to power efficient heterogeneous resources by transferring the deployment and optimization effort from the consumer to the stack of software running on the cloud infrastructure. At CloudLightning (www.scloudlightning.eu), we aim to expand this direction and build a Cloud Management and Delivery Infrastructure based on these principles.
CloudLightning + offers the opportunity to expand the activities of the Timisorene team involved in CloudLightning to include the knowledge gained within AMICAS in activities related to self-organizing mechanisms that are not currently in charge of the Timisoara team but the coordinator.

Abstract:
Cloud computing emerged four years ago as a new paradigm for distributed computing is currently on the hype due to its promises to free the users from the need of infrastructure investments, the providers from loosing computing cycles and non-using storage capacity, and the developers from the hardware issues and human interactions in setting computing and storage environments. The current practice shows a low level of expectation fulfillment and research activities should focus to fill the technological gaps. The automation of the development, deployment and provisioning of Cloud related products can provide a step forward to achieve the Cloud vision. In this context, we propose to enhance the automatic management, dynamic load balancing, scheduling and self-management techniques for Cloud computing environments. Moreover, the project targets the emerging concept of Sky computing as new paradigm for clustering Clouds in a similar way as Grids have been conceived as clusters of clusters. The complexity of the problems in Sky computing management is higher than in the Grid case due to new parameters like cost constraints. Agent technologies and natural computing will be used to solve these difficult problems. The outputs of the project will consist in architectural views and proof-of-the-concept software prototypes. Other actions like workshops, mobilities, or cooperation with other initiatives will support the research activities to ensure their impact in the community.
