Abstract:
The scope of this project is to develop an experimental device meant to demonstrate the feasibility of increasing the therapeutic potential of wheat sprouts (Triticum aestivum) by treating them with non-thermal activated water (PAW). The effect of natural products in the prophylaxis or even in the treatment of diseases is well known, since, in most cases, they have no side effects on the human body. Excellent results have been obtained following the introduction into the diet of natural products, even in cases considered incurable. Wheat sprouts are a rich source of nutrients (proteins, lipids, fibers, vitamins) and bioactive phytochemicals (BFT) (polyphenols, gamma-aminobutyric acid, etc.). The project propose the utilization of a non-thermal plasma-based technology (NTP) to produce plasma-activated water (PAW) aiming to increase the bioactive phytochemicals in wheat sprouts with benefits for human health and well-being. The technological innovation currently has been tested, as a small single laboratory unit, which can produce low concentrations of NO3- and H2O2 in water treated by non-thermal plasma. In order to bring this innovation to market, the key technical challenges of the proposal are referring to: the reactor/power supply scale-up to a laboratory complex equipment for PAW production, power supply optimization, long time tests of the complete system and correlation between the electrical parameters of the NTP with BFT produced by wheat sprouts.

Abstract:
The concept of bio-pesticide/herbicide is new in organic agriculture and is based on crop protection with plant extracts and essential oils, because they are easily biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Artemisia L. is one of the largest genera in the tribe Anthemideae Cass., family Asteraceae Dumort. In Romania, the genus is currently represented by nineteen species (from which three alien taxa), many of them with a potential biotechnological value, due to their high content in monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and flavonoids. It is well documented the broad spectrum of biological effects of Artemisia extracts. In this context, the purpose of the project is obtaining and chemical characterization of new plant bioproducts (essential oils, methanolic and hydro-ethanolic extracts) originated in five taxa of Artemisia genus from spontaneous flora in Romania, with potential to be used as biopesticide (pre – and post harvest fungal disease management in organic crop) and as pre-emergent bioherbicides (allelopathic effect). Also, the cito- and genotoxicity tests towards healthy human cells will be perform, in order to establish that the new bioproducts will meet the highest standards of safety for human and the environmental health.

Abstract:
Rhizobia application as biofertilizers and bioremediators is becoming an agricultural priority in several countries around the word. Unfortunately, only a few countries in Europe have launched respective programs until now. Furthermore, is becoming less scientifically and socially acceptable the uncontrolled release of foreign organisms to indigenous agricultural and natural ecosystems. Thus the identification of indigenous microbial strains for use as biofertilizers and bioremediators is becoming a one-way approach for the modern sustainable agriculture. The proposed project will combine both basic and applied research in the fields of –omic technologies, biochemistry and applied biotechnology in order to: a) Isolate and molecularly characterize indigenous rhizobia strains able to nodulate legumes species of interest and have potential to be used as bioremediators; b) Analyze physiological and molecular traits of the nodulated legumes using modern -omic technologies; c) Explore rhizobial biodiversity to identify novel detoxifying enzymes such as haloalkane dehalogenase; d) Characterize the rhizobial haloalkane dehalogenases in terms of substrate specificity; e) Assess the ability of selected rhizobial strains to remediate highly toxic pollutants as DBE and DCE. Finally, the integration of advanced research with an efficient mechanism for transfer of knowledge, training and dissemination will contribute favorably to the reinforcement of the research quality in Romania.
