Abstract:
Although the increasing interest in the last decade in psychrophilic microorganisms because of their great biotechnological potential, little is known about ice microbiota from alpine ice caves. Besides an applicative interest, identification of microbial biodiversity in these highly preserved ecosystems from relatively unexposed environments contributes to determining both preservation and functional role of microbial species in the caves’ ice microbiota supra-metabolism, and to developing exobiology models for glacial ice subsurface biology on other planets and moons. Scarisoara Ice Cave (Romania) contains the world’s second largest cave ice block that was dated up to more than 1200 years old. Specific permafrost conditions of the cave environment during ice layers formation were correlated with climate patters. In this context, our main interest is to identify the microbial biodiversity in ice deposits from Scarisoara Cave, and to determine a chronological distribution of ice microorganisms and a corresponding climate-based biomarker. This study encompasses phylogenetic and physiological analysis of uncultivated and/or cultivated bacteria including the photoautotrophic cyanobacteria, archaea and eukaryotic microorganisms isolated from ice layers of different ages and ice lakes. Newly determined unknown strains will be further isolated in view of selecting and characterizing new psychrophilic microorganisms with applicative potential in bionanotechonologies.

Abstract:
The concept of system resilience refers to the ability of the system to return to a non-failure state after a failure has occurred. This concept has been already applied, for some time now, to ecological systems, to social- ecological systems, as well as to water resource systems. The aim of the present project is to acquire a fundamental understanding of the way by which hydrothermal systems behave when subject to natural and anthropogenic external disturbances, and to outline and quantify those hydrological, chemical and microbiological parameters which could be able to provide a general instrument for evaluating the resilience of those systems. In order to achieve this goal, our intention is to perform an investigation, as extended as possible, of a very important and quite distinct geothermal hydrostructure in Romania, namely the thermo-mineral water accumulation at Baile Herculane, and to consequently acquire a background allowing us to devise concepts and conclusions whose applicability should be of general validity for any similar setting occurring worldwide.
