Abstract:
The project Crossing Borders: Insights into the Intellectual and Cultural History of Transylvania (1848-1948) is an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach of the intellectual and cultural life of Transylvania in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. It highlights important aspects of Transylvania’s intellectual and cultural evolution, having as temporal references the Revolution of 1848, the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Dualism in 1867, the achievement of the Great Union in 1918, the interwar period and the establishment of communism, which induced paradigmatic changes in the Transylvanian intellectuals’ thought and action. Transylvania is characterized by the confluence of several cultures. Owing to the complexity of this multicultural space and the multitude of perspectives from which aspects of the intellectual, cultural, social and political life are discussed, we resort to the key-concept of border. The accent is laid on its intermediality and in-betweenness, favouring communication, mobility, dialogism, polyphony, instead of conflictual difference. It refers to political and geographical borders, or to symbolical borders: interdisciplinary, intercultural (or identity borders), inter-institutional, interethnic, and international borders). This is true for the case of Transylvania too, and the project intends to reflect the fact that political borders could not get in the way of cultural, intellectual, economic mobilities in Central and East Europe.
