Abstract:
Modern therapy has changed the way diseases are controlled and has brought significant benefits to life as it reduced morbidity and mortality rates. In spite of all the benefits, the possible occurrence of drug side effects is a common cause, often preventable, of illness, disability and even death. Correct information, with recent data gathered in hospital practice, would enable the prevention of such undesirable situations. Besides the intrinsic danger associated with the drug, patients might have a particular, unpredictable sensitivity to certain drugs, which requires careful monitoring of side effects.
The INFORAD computerized system for rational drug use aims to create a database with data provided by intensive monitoring of hospitalized patients. Such a database is a flexible and useful method of managing data concerning the security of drugs, as well as data regarding many other patient-related health problems. The method is meant to provide information on side effects, drug-related problems and the health experiences of the studied population.
The INFORAD computerized system also offers the possibility of testing some hypotheses connected to drug safety. This is done by quantitative and qualitative analyses of the collected data in order to generate information that will be subsequently interpreted using additional sources such as data from clinical studies and the available literature. This information will be subsequently communicated.
