Abstract:
This project addresses different aspects of science teaching at the pre-university level. The project “Inquiry-based education in science and technology: I-BEST” is focused on training school teachers and students to develop their own research projects, as a method to learn and a mean to serve the communities they belong to. By identifying the needs and expectations at European level as it concerns the development of a knowledge-based society which calls for the formation of an educated and responsible citizen, the project proposes the creation of a new model for science teaching in school. Using a student-centered approach, with training provided into a highly technical, cross-curriculum and collaborative environment, this project will assist schools teachers and students, to support science education in the frame of a national network. Courses and demo sessions about the educational training kits and materials developed in the frame of the project will be organized for school teachers. Some of them will benefit of the expertise of foreign teacher trainers. Two international conferences organized in the project frame will strength the links between the Romanian science teachers and experts from EU.

Abstract:
The project “Sensor systems for secure Operation of Critical Installations – SOCI” will focus on the use of intrinsic/ extrinsic optical fiber sensors for the monitoring of critical installations operation, as for example: nuclear facilities, nuclear waste repository sites, charge particle accelerators. The project will be developed in the context of the European COST Action TD1001 “Novel and Reliable Optical Fibre Sensor Systems for Future Security and Safety Applications (OFSeSa)”. Close cooperation with teams from Ireland, France, Germany, UK, Italy, as well as other COST Action partners will support the project implementation. The project will focus on tests for the possible use of such sensing systems for radiation detection and radiation field mapping. The major novelty promoted by the project refers to the use of a new optical reflectometry technique. This technique, enabling a spatial resolution better than the resolution reported until now, will be used for on-line and off-line evaluation of optical fibers, optical fiber sensors and optical fiber passive components degradation under irradiation. The techniques to be developed for radiation monitoring/ dosimetry/ mapping using discrete and distributed optical fiber sensors are of interest for: safety and secure operation of nuclear installations/ sites; radiation protection of personnel and patients; and for manufacturers of radiation-based equipments for non-destructive testing, medical applications, and industrial processing.

Abstract:
Optical Fibre Sensors offer a definitive solution to monitoring extreme parameters associated with security and safety applications. While the advantages of such sensors are well known, there are a number of identified technical problems yet to be resolved. By supporting collaboration of experts from multidisciplinary fields, to share their knowledge in sensor development and system design, together with developing characterisation and validation procedures, these problems can be addressed and so new generation optical fibre sensor systems can be realised awarding fundamentally stable and reliable sensors for enhancing public security and safety.
