Abstract:
The shift of consumer preference towards foods, cheese mainly, made of goat milk triggered a true competition between the dairy species, and the goats are gaining advantage. The significant increase of the animal stock and the interest of the processors are dictated by the special particularities of the goat milk, its positive influence on human health given the increasing rate of metabolism and heart diseases.
Given the current circumstances, an important problem in disagreement with this evolution is the rather low productivity of the current stock of animals, of about 50-60% of the biological potential of this species as a result of the deficient feeding and maintenance system. Redressing this situation, actually requires action at the national level, through a set of complex measures and operations achievable by a consortium consisting of the National Research and Development Institute for Animal Biology and Nutrition (IBNA Baloteşti), which is the project coordinator, SC SIAT S.A. (P1), SC Agroindustrial Elcomex S.A. (P2, SME), and the National Association of Romania Goat Breeders - CAPRIROM (P3, NGO).
This process will begin with the chemical analysis of feeds and their revaluation to establish the basic components organic and with the determination of the neutral detergent fibre (NDF), of acid detergent fibre (ADF) cations and anions, of the polyunsaturated fatty acids and of the amino acids that limit milk production. The immune status (A, M, G immunoglobulin and blood biochemical parameters) will also be analyzed, in each physiological phase and according to rations structure, especially for those animals that are imported. The next step presumes parallel digestibility on fistulised animals trials, to determine the concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA), essential nutritive substrate for the animals, and also for studying the nitrogen matter. The last two activities automatically correlate with the structure and activity of the microbial populations in order to determine the involvement of the dietary components in proteosynthesis. The next operation entails checking and adjusting the nutrient norms and diet optimization. Another important element of this approach is the involvement, in each stage of activity, of a team of IT and statistic specialists (P1) who, as the activities progress, will store and process the information and use it to develop nutritional software and to create the portal of the project. Basically, this means designing several simple feeding formulations, with a solid and competent scientific basis, to be disseminated and implemented via brochures, guidebooks and software among the specialists at different administrative levels and among the associations for goat production (P3). Hopefully, this activity will eventually successfully harmonise the entire activity of goat rearing in Romania.
We therefore undertook to develop an IT-based sustainable feeding system relying on modern scientific criteria, to design and implement feeding strategies for all physiological and productive categories of goats, local or imported. Finally, we will be able to provide pertinent and coherent diet formulations, understandable by all farmers, for all categories of goats. This will enable relating the applied scientific research and the technological progress to the evolution and to the current socio-economical requirements and also to those of Romanian applied animal husbandry in goats rearing field (small farmers included).
