Abstract:
The goal of this proposal is to obtain new organochalcogen compounds and metal complexes which can act as efficient antitumor and chemopriventive agents. Our objectives are: (i) to design organochalcogen derivatives of type R2E2, RR'E, R2E (E = Se,Te; R,R' = organic groups with donor atoms capable for intra- or intermolecular interactions) and their metal (Au,Ag,Zn,Sn,Bi) complexes, with potential as antioxidant, antitumor and chemopreventive agents, (ii) to study their solution behavior and solid state structure, (iii) to assay their antitumor activity against commercial tumor cell lines, (iv) to find an optimized strategy, based on experimental evidence and theoretical approach (DFT, QSAR) for highly active species with low toxicity, (v) to investigate the relation structure-antioxidant activity-antitumor properties for selected classes of compounds and (vi) to identify the interaction mechanism at cell level. The proposed organochalcogen compounds are flexible, potential tridentate systems, containing, besides Se or Te, other functionalities (pyrazole (pz), phenylthiazole (Phtz), amino, imino, COOH, OH) which share with the central chalcogen or the metal their donation ability and the own biological properties. The chosen ligands and their metal complexes are very attractive both for fundamental research and as promising active antitumor agents. The project combines research excellence and complementarity and is essentially based on inter- and multidisciplinary studies.

Abstract:
The proposed research project refers to some new classes of metal complexes which can act as precursors for new materials, either thin films or nanopowders. Thermal decomposition and CVD technics are envisaged. The main goal is to obtain new complexes with metal-chalcogen bonds, mainly with monomeric structure and good volatility, suitable as precursors for materials used in electronics. In order to avoid intermolecular associations, we decided to combine the stabilization effect of organic groups with pendant arms and donor atoms capable for intramolecular coordination in organochalcogen (Se, Te) ligands with the high flexibility of a new class of dichalcogenolato organophosphorus(V) ligands, i. e. [(EPR2)(O2SR)N]H. We will follow different synthesis routes, starting from metal halides. Taking in account their specific electronic, optical and magnetic properties, our interests are focused on several species containing d- or main group metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Sn, Sb), which can act as precursors either for nanopowders or thin films. Structural characterization of the new chemical species, both in solution and in solid state, will be performed by using different spectroscopic methods: multinuclear (1H, 13C, 31P, 77Se, 125Te), 2D and dynamic NMR, IR, RAMAN, mass spectrometry, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, ESR for paramagnetic species. Thin films and nanopowders will be characterized by specific methods;SEM,TEM, EDS, EXAFS.

Abstract:
The project aims to obtain a new generation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using novel families of made-by-design spacers (Cyclophane and cyclophane-like spacers with pre-formed cavities; C3-symmetry cryptand-based ligands; Tetrahedral synthons; Organometallic spacers featuring robust metal-carbon bonds, e. g. Organometallic halides, with appropriate organic groups attached to the metal centre to provide stability of the organometallic unit and/or potential to develop 3D architectures. The efforts will be concentrated towards compounds with the metal in lower oxidation state bearing a lone pair of electrons and thus higher reactivity). The construction of MOFs using organometallic tectons is a field largely unexplored. A special emphasis will be given to the post-synthesis processing of the MOFs (removal of solvent and weakly coordinated ligands; functionalization of selected MOFs by nanoconfinement with metal nanoparticles and functionalization for generation of acidic and basic sites). The sorption of various gases (H2, CO2, C2H2, etc.) as well the catalytic properties of the newly synthesized MOFs will be investigated. Enantioselective organic reactions catalyzed by chiral MOFs will be studied as well. In this scope MOFs functionalized with acid and base functions will be investigated in the asymmetric aldol reaction between representative ketones with various aromatic aldehydes under solvent-free conditions. The luminescence properties of some MOFs as well as the influence of the host molecules on the luminescence (especially for those containing lanthanide cations) will be investigated. The ability of the new MOFs for decontamination processes will be tested - more specifically, MOFs will be used as adsorbents for the molecules resulted from the degradation of pharmaceutical compounds via either liquid phase catalytic oxidation or plasma.
