Abstract:
The proposed research topic is considering the environmental aspects resulting from the leather and fur processing industry. Thus, the project focus is on the treatment and recovery of the resulting products from the processing of hides and pelts, such as: crude fats derived from skin to be extracted, modified, and recovered from its use as biofuel used in the training of an auto engine, either by digestion with sludge from wastewater treatment in a tank for the production of biogas, used as a heat source. The protein also results will be treated and recovered from its use as a fertilizer in agriculture.
Chemical processing of hides and fur is an important source of environmental pollution through wastewater due to the great diversity of chemical products used in fabrication (salts, acids, caustics, dyes, grease products, degreasing, etc.), but due to the removal of the skin, during processing of the organic compounds in an appreciable proportion (from gross skin lies only 60% in the final product). The amount of wastewater from tannery is great, if it is proposed that for getting a ton of finished leather is consumed an average of 70m3 of water. The concentration of production in high-yield tannery involves special problems of environment protection, given that virtually all of the technologies of processing of hides and pelts are sources of pollution. Waste waters have a complex chemical load, made up of proteins and fats from the skin, and the gross excess chemicals used in various phases of processing.
Through multidisciplinary implications of the project, the implementation of the project consortium consists of academic institutions and private companies from different domain activities. In concordance, the project coordinator is University Politehnica of Bucharest, the project implementation team includes teachers, doctoral students and young researchers from Power Engineer Faculty and Mechanical Faculty who will investigate the methods to exploit the useful components of the waste from tanneries in the energy field that make up the project research novelty, also a team with rich experience in the tanneries processes and technologies from the National R&D Institute for Leather will work to find new methods to separate grease and proteins from the crude hide, the economic and social impact of the project results will be analysed by a research team within The Bucharest University of Economic Studies, a research team from the Police Academy "A.I. Cuza", Fire Officers Faculty will identify the risk situations at explosion that may occur in biogas reactor.
The beneficiary of the project results is SC TARO COMIMPEX SRL BUCURESTI, a company with tradition in leather processing. The separation of fats and protein from the waste of skin will be performed using an installation made by SC BERIMEX SRL BUCURESTI. For pipeline networks, the biogas reactor and automation installations the SC ICPE Bistrita will be involve, a company with tradition in the design and implementation of treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants gained through work carried out under the programmes of the national R&D and applications deployed in more than 20 years of activities.
The general objective of the proposed project is the design and implementation of modern waste treatment facilities and the recovery of waste from leather and fur processing industry with the use of components useful novelty in the energetic field. Research results will be through the publications and patents, so it will make a significant contribution to increasing the visibility and impact of the Romanian research to international level.
