Abstract:
The project “The Second Way: Prepositional Adverbials in Primary Dialects of Romance” is a follow-up project of the previous project “The Third Way: Prepositional Adverbials from Latin to Romance”. The Third Way project considers prepositional adverbials (Type C), e.g., Fr. à la dure, Sp. a la ligera (cf. Engl. in short), as a relevant third way of forming adverbials aside adverbial adjectives, e.g., Fr. aller direct, Sp. hablar claro (Type A) (cf. Engl. to speak clear) and derived adverbs in -mente, e.g., Fr. directement, Sp. tranquilamente (Type B) (cf. Engl. to speak clearly). The expansion of Type C has been fostered by general analyticizing tendencies in the passage from Latin to Romance. While Type B has been imposed by standardization (except Romanian), this type generally lacks in primary dialects of Romance. Primary dialects thus continue the Indo-European tradition of using adjectives for adverbial functions (Type A), extending it to Type C in the Latin-Romance transition. Consequently, Type C must be considered the third but the second way of forming adverbials in primary dialects. The Third Way project has provided overwhelming evidence for the prominence of Type C in primary dialects.

Abstract:
The project is the first attempt to systematically compare the evolution of Romanian and Portuguese address forms (pronominal, nominal and verbal). This diachronic analysis aims at describing the two of the most complex address systems in Romance languages, using authentic letters written over a span of five centuries. We will use online corpora and published compendiums of epistolary texts in both languages to create an inventory of examples, which will be analysed through the lens of historical pragmatics, with the objective of identifying linguistic and cultural patterns of similarity between Romanian and European Portuguese, as well as the specificities of each language. The main goals of the project are to identify what address forms were used in letters in Romanian and Portuguese from the beginning of the 16th century until the end of the 20th century and to explain how their use has evolved over the centuries, according to several criteria: type of letter (personal vs. institutional), social status, gender, age (if available), the dynamics of the (hierarchical or egalitarian) relationships between senders and addressees.

Abstract:
While research on adverbs in Romance traditionally focusses on adverbs ending in –ment(e) (e.g. Fr. durement ‘toughly’) and, secondarily, on adverbial adjectives (e.g. Fr. travailler dur ‘to work hard’), prepositional phrases such as Fr. à la dure ‘to do sth. the hard way’ or Sp. de seguro ‘certainly’ have been neglected by manuals, grammars and linguistic studies. Most linguistic studies dealing with the pattern “preposition + adjective” (PA-pattern) suggest analyses in terms of adverbial locutions, that is, lexicalized phrases. From the point of view of present-day standard, this analysis is basically justified. However, the diachronic perspective foregrounds productivity and usage as an alternative to adverbs in –ment(e) or adverbial adjectives. The project therefore tackles this striking fact. Taking Old and Golden Age Spanish under scrutiny, Hummel (2012) finds not less than 57 series such as continuo (adv.), continuamente, de continuo, a la continua.

Abstract:
The project The Encyclopedia of Romanian Imaginaries. Historical Patrimony and Cultural-Linguistic Identities (ROMIMAG) aims to produce a knowledge base and a five-volume Encyclopaedia, providing a synoptic perspective on the cultural inheritance and spiritual identities of Romania. However, it would be impossible to tackle cultural identities without a thorough analysis of the collective imagination. Guided by the powerful and innovative concept of social and cultural imaginaries, along with other key concepts such as semantic basin, linguistic field, constellations of images, fractal identity, ROMIMAG will use multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary methodologies for analyzing the main domains of Romanian collective representations. It will feature 5 scientific work packages, covering the following fields: Romania’s Linguistic Patrimony; Literary Imaginaries; Historical Representations; Religious Imaginaries; Artistic Imaginaries and Patrimony. Within a two-year calendar, each work package will feature about 20 contributors, who will produce 20 articles presenting the main cultural basins covered by their volume, and 2 patents. This database will be published online (an interactive site, designed as an “electronic hive”) and in print (a five-volume Encyclopedia, published by Polirom, Iași). ROMIMAG targets different categories of public: educated (writers, artists, musicians, theatre and movie directors, linguists, editors, media specialists, curators), broad (pupils, students, general readership) and institutional (media studios, advertising and tourism companies, leaders and policy makers from the administration and governance levels). This panoramic image of the cultural and spiritual patrimony of Romania will offer, within the frame of European interculturalism, a better understanding of national, but also of local and group identities, which could prevent latent tensions and social violence from erupting and allow the configuration of a collaborative climate.

Abstract:
The objective of this cooperation project between the Department of Romance Studies and the ZIM (Centre for Information Modelling - Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities) is the creation of an Open Access Database "Adjective-Adverb Interfaces in Romance". This will render linguistic data of the adjective-adverb phenomenon found in Romance languages generally accessible and usable by implementing an annotated and lemmatised online corpus. In the sense of Open-Access these linguistic data, which are the basis of scientific publications on this topic, are to be rendered comprehensible and publicly available. This project will be the first to collect scientific linguistic data of Romance adjective-adverbs according to the norms and standards established by the CLARIN ERIC (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure / European Research Infrastructure Consortium for Language Resources). These data will be technically processed by the ZIM.

Abstract:
Great efforts are being made nowadays to ensure access through modern means to the elements of cultural patrimony (e.g. manuscripts, old books etc.). Various projects and public initiatives are trying to grant access for the research community to resources which otherwise would be difficult to acquire; their efforts aim at finding solutions for digitization and content partition. In a similar vein, partition mechanisms are being developed to allow the content providers to partition the content they currently hold. Facilitating the access to the resources of the cultural patrimony through electronic means marks an important step in the research of patrimony objects, mainly because this step grants the access to these resources, which otherwise would be difficult to access and study.
We consider that the next step of this process is the extraction of content (a direction which already retrieved certain results) from this corpus of documents and the application of methods of processing natural language, (semantic) annotation and statistic processing in view of testing the data extraction through semi-automatic means so that it encourages conceptual correlations/connections. By identifying the concepts and by integrating them into an ample system of correlations, the informational content of these resources is rated, and this aspect constitutes the foundation of cultural production with a high social impact. In this context, the project puts forward 3 elements: the creation of a virtual library of old Romanian books and manuscripts (OROMB) at BCU creating instruments for the extraction and processing of OROMB content in order to assess them for prospective research of specialists in the fields of: theology, economy, philology, history, ethics/philosophy, medicine etc. the creation of a system of identification of the concepts and their correlations, with interdisciplinary significance, based on the scanned OROMB; this makes up the primary innovative element of the project
The project is designed as an instrument of actual cultural production, having direct positive implications in terms of social dynamics; facilitating access to OROMB and identifying the concepts contained and their set of correspondences allows the extraction, correlation and assessment of the information contained in the Romanian cultural treasury. Taking into account the extension of the corpus generated through these interconnections, we consider that the expansion of the set of instruments is crucial and we deem that it ought to encompass automatic means of processing content in view of retrieving new information.
The model created in the project is in fact an instrument that aims at enhancing the quality of the extracted text, by making use of technologies which process natural language, as well as through content analysis, using both the analysis and statistics methods of the social networks, which expedite the understanding of the corpus of the cultural patrimony. The project proposes the creation of a collaborative informational system for the management of OROMB. The documents included in the project will be scanned, compressed, archived, OCR processed, stored in a files deposit, which will ensure multidimensional analyses; apart from text management, these will be then opened to public access. The oversight of the documents will feature as text management (creating, modifying, indexing and key-words use), as well as hyper-text structures, through which document entities are connected to other document entities, thus creating a network structure analogous to WWW. Following the digitization, the documents will be edited and studied by OROMB experts from various fields, who will define the specifications for the extraction of the concepts and the connections between them; the correlation network that emerged will be used to generate new scientific productions meant to valorise the OROMB treasury as an element of social dynamics.
